Devils crushed by Sabres
New Jersey suffered a 7-2 loss Saturday night at Buffalo to drop to 0-1-1 on the season. The Devils cut their deficit to 2-1 37 seconds into the second period on a Kyle Palmieri goal assisted by Taylor Hall and Nico Hischier. The Sabres pushed their lead to 5-1 by the end of the second, while New Jersey brought it back to 5-2 58 seconds into the third period via a Travis Zajac goal with assists going to Blake Coleman and Damon Severson. The hosts added two more goals the rest of the way to continue the rout. Mackenzie Blackwood made 29 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort.
Flyers hold off Blackhawks
Philadelphia picked up a 4-3 home win over Chicago Friday night in its season opener. Travis Konecny opened the scoring for the Flyers 6:24 into the first period on an unassisted goal, while the Blackhawks tied it up later in the first. Oscar Lindblom gave Philadelphia the lead again with 13:32 left in the second period on a power play goal off assists from Konecny and Ivan Provorov. Konecny pushed it to 3-1 with 1:56 to go in the second on a goal assisted by Scott Laughton. Chicago pulled within 3-2 with 13 seconds left in the second, but Michael Raffl pushed it back to 4-2 midway through the third period with assists going to Tyler Pitlick and Robert Hagg. The Blackhawks trimmed it to a one-goal game later in the third, but the hosts ultimately held on. Carter Hart gave up three goals on 31 shots to pick up the win.
NHL Betting Trends
New Jersey
The Devils are 6-20 in their last 26 games versus the Eastern Conference. New Jersey is 14-37 in its last 51 road games.
Philadelphia
The Flyers are 11-4 in their last 15 games as a favorite. Philadelphia is 2-5 in its last seven home games.
Prediction:
The Devils look like they might struggle on the back end all season and I don’t have a lot of faith in Cory Schneider after he was mediocre the majority of last season. I expect the Flyers to be marginally better this season and they looked sharp for the most part at home over the weekend. This opponent is a notch behind Chicago and I am wagering on Philly to once again take care of business on its home ice.
