Carolina Looks to Extend Win Streak Against Jaromir and The Rangers

The Carolina Hurricanes’ three-game winning streak began with a victory over the New York Rangers last week. Another win over New York on Tuesday night would give the defending Stanley Cup champions their longest run of the season.

Carolina (12-7-3) looks for its season-high fourth straight win and sixth in seven games when it faces the Rangers (11-9-1) at Madison Square Garden.
The Hurricanes defeated the Rangers 2-1 on Wednesday and beat Washington 4-1 on Friday. Carolina then topped Dallas 5-4 on Saturday, giving it 27 points and moving it into a tie for first in the Southeast Division.
Offense has been the key to the Hurricanes’ recent surge, as they’ve outscored opponents 26-15 in the last six games. Carolina is averaging 30.3 shots on goal in that span.
“A game can be summed up in scoring chances, I think,” said Carolina coach Peter Laviolette, whose team also won three in a row from Oct. 13-16. “When you dominate the scoring chances, that means you probably dominated the game.”
Center Eric Staal scored in each period Saturday for his first three-goal game of the season. Staal, with a team-leading 13 goals, had gone a season-high four games without one.
“It’s been like that for a lot of hockey players – you get a lot of chances, you make a great shot and it doesn’t go your way,” Staal said. “Then you take another couple of looks, and it’ll just find the net for you.”
Rod Brind’Amour is also finding the net easily. The Carolina center is the only player to record a point in each of the team’s 12 wins. With an assist against Dallas, he extended his point streak to eight games, with six goals and seven assists during that span.
Brind’Amour tops the team with 31 points. The Hurricanes have scored 76 goals, tied for second-most in the Eastern Conference.
“When you work hard, good things happen, regardless of the player,” Laviolette said. “You want to send them back in the direction to enjoy it, because they’re playing the game the right way.”
Laviolette hopes his team continues its winning ways against the Rangers, whom the Hurricanes have defeated three straight times.
New York, though, is coming off a 4-1 home victory over Tampa Bay on Sunday that snapped a two-game losing skid.
“We weren’t happy with our start (Saturday) and we wanted to get off to a better start,” left wing Brendan Shanahan said of the Rangers’ 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh.
New York, which had lost three of four, managed one goal in its previous two losses.
The team’s recent struggles have not extended to Shanahan. The 19-year-veteran had a goal and assist Sunday to extend his point streak to seven games, during which he has four goals and five assists.
Jaromir Jagr scored his 600th goal Sunday, joining Shanahan to become the 16th player to reach the mark.
“I just hope I get a lot more before I retire,” said Jagr, who added two assists.
The Rangers hope he can start getting more Tuesday in the matchup with the Hurricanes, against whom Jagr has 91 points (28 goals, 63 assists) in 62 games. It’s his third-highest total against any team.
“When he’s got his feet under him and he’s going, you’re not stopping him,” New York coach Tom Renney said.
New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who made 27 saves Sunday, has allowed seven goals on 39 shots in two career appearances – both losses – against Carolina.
