Bettors Split as Senators Head to Mowtown to Meet The Red Wings

Detroit’s power play has come alive just in time for a matchup with Ottawa.
The Red Wings look to take advantage of the Senators’ struggling penalty kill when the teams meet in Detroit on Tuesday.
Detroit (17-7-4) beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-1 on Saturday, its fifth win in six games. The Red Wings scored a season-high five goals with the man advantage and have 10 power-play goals in their last five contests.
Oddsmakers have made Detroit -152 money line (NHL Odds) favorites for todays game, the over/under has been set at 6 total goals (View NHL Sports Books).
“They took a lot of penalties and we capitalized,” said Henrik Zetterberg, who had two of the power-play goals.
Mikael Samuelsson also scored twice on the power play for Detroit, which has converted just 14.7 percent of its power play chances this season, ranking near the bottom of the league.
“Earlier in the year our power play was pretty good,” said coach Mike Babcock, whose team had not scored more than twice in one game with the man advantage before Saturday. “It went into the tank and then we were playing well, but the puck wasn’t going in.”
Daniel Cleary also scored for Detroit, and Pavel Datsyuk and Mathieu Schneider each had three assists. Datsyuk has six points, including two goals, in his last three games.
Goalie Dominik Hasek stopped 21 shots and has allowed only eight goals in his last six games.
Ottawa (15-15-1), meanwhile, allowed five power-play goals – matching a franchise record – in Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Senators are killing 82.4 percent of their opponents’ power-play chances, but have allowed eight man-advantage goals in their last three games.
They had not given up more than two in a game this season before Sunday.
“They scored when they got the chances,” Ottawa coach Bryan Murray said. “To be honest and fair, they played a very good hockey game.”
Christoph Schubert and Mike Fisher each scored in the third period for Ottawa, which lost its third straight. The Senators had won four in a row and eight of nine before their current slide.
Jason Spezza had one assist, ending a four-game goal-scoring streak, but extending his points streak to nine games. He has six goals and seven assists during the run.
Goalie Martin Gerber gave up four goals on 13 shots before being pulled in favor of Ray Emery midway through the second period. Emery allowed two, and has given up 10 goals in his last three games.
Defenseman Wade Redden missed his fifth game with chest and shoulder injuries, and right wing Daniel Alfredsson missed his third straight due to a hip injury.
Detroit and Ottawa are meeting for the first time since Oct. 11, 2003, when the Red Wings won 3-2 in overtime on the road. Detroit has taken six of the last seven meetings from the Senators.
