McDavid was the points leader in the 2016-17 season, racking up 100 total. He had 30 goals with 70 assists in his second year in the NHL. McDavid had a lot of hype coming into the NHL and he has been able to meet it, winning the Hart Trophy last season. He has already established himself as the leader of the rising Oilers.
Crosby was the goal leader last season, posting 44. It was the second-most he had in a season in his career. Crosby also had 45 assists and 89 points, which was second in the points race. Crosby is a two-time winner of this honor, last claiming the award in the 2013-14 season.
Matthews was a rookie in the 2016-17 season, yet he posted 40 goals and 29 assists for the Maple Leafs. He, like McDavid, had a lot of buzz coming out of being drafted by Toronto and he met expectations. One can only expect the 19-year-old to take a step forward this season and be even more productive.
Ovechkin is coming off a lower-than-usual season in terms of production. He had 33 goals with 36 assists. The 33 goals were the second-fewest he’s had in a season, but the other was when he scored 32 while playing in just 48 games. Ovechkin played in all 82 games last season. Ovechkin has won this award three times, last doing so in the 2012-13 season.
