Connor McDavid registered an assist in Wednesday night’s 3-1 win over the Maple Leafs. This year’s first matchup between McDavid and Auston Matthews fell a little flat in offensive production, but that didn’t keep the former Hart Trophy winner off the scoresheet. McDavid notched an assist on Josh Archibald’s empty-net goal that sealed the win for the Oilers. Leon Draisaitl, who scored his first goal of the season in this game, managed to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation. McDavid now has three goals and three assists in five games this season, but four of those points came in one game.

Auston Matthews was on the ice briefly for Thursday’s practice before leaving. “No real update,” said coach Sheldon Keefe afterward. “He wasn’t feeling great today coming off the game yesterday.” There is expected to be more of an update on Friday morning. The Leafs host the Edmonton Oilers again on Friday night. Matthews may have just skipped the session for maintenance, but we will let you know if anything comes from this. He logged 24:14 of ice time versus the Oilers on Wednesday.
