Colin Blackwell scored his 12th of the season Friday in a 4-1 win over the Islanders. That’s six goals in the last seven games for the 28-year-old who had only three goals in 33 NHL games before the start of the season after he was drafted 194th overall by San Jose in 2011. “I’ve been in a couple of different organizations now and kind of felt like I was just, the way I describe it is, that sweatshirt you haven’t worn in four or five years and then you see your brother wearing it, your sister wearing it and you kind of get rattled because it has a little sentimental value and you don’t want to give it up,” Blackwell said. “I feel like I just haven’t been given an opportunity and haven’t been given a chance or anything along those lines. For me, from Day One since I got here, I truly felt that my teammates, the coaching staff and management believed in me, and that’s why I thought it would be a great fit. When the opportunity comes you have to make the most of it. I try to do that every single day. There’s definitely a couple of times I’ve bounced around. I’ve learned from it. But I would have given up a heck of a long time ago if I didn’t believe in myself.” Blackwell has 17 points in 31 games and is one of the best stories of the season.

Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals in Friday’s 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers. Varlamov made a beautiful blocker-save on Kevin Rooney late in the third period however the game was already out of reach for the Islanders so it only serves as a silver-lining for him. The 32-year-old won’t shoulder the blame for the loss however he could’ve been better on a couple of Rangers goals. Varlamov owns a 16-8-3 record with a 2.21 goals-against average and .922 save percentage.
