Igor Shesterkin stopped 31-of-32 shots in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens. This was Shesterkin’s second consecutive start after he ceded the the season-opener to Alexander Georgiev. Outside of a Jonathan Drouin goal in the third period, the 25-year-old goalie did not allow any scoring action on his watch. The Rangers signed Shesterkin to a four-year contract over the summer. While Georgiev should continue to see some opportunities as the season winds along, this figures to be mostly Shesterkin’s starting gig barring monumental collapse or injury.

Saturday was a night to remember for goaltender Alex Bishop. The University of Toronto goalkeeper was thrust into the spotlight when Petr Mrazek went down with a groin injury Thursday and the Leafs were forced to sign Bishop to an amateur tryout as they had no money to spend against the salary cap to call up Michael Hutchinson from the minors. “A great experience,” Bishop said afterward the contest. “(Stepping out) for warmup, with the flash of the cameras was pretty surreal. It’s pretty distracting, but cool to get in there and taking some shots. It’s not lost on me that this is a pretty rare opportunity. I’m pretty lucky to be cheering for my hometown team.” Bishop has been the emergency goalie for a couple of years, splitting it with David Ayres and it was Ayres turn a couple of seasons ago when Mrazek and James Reimer were injured against Toronto while playing for Carolina, putting Ayres in net and making him famous around the hockey and sports world.
