Senators Season Odds
The Ottawa Senators will try to rely on their offense to make a Cup run in 2008. Oddsmakers have established the Senators’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 16/1.
The Senators hired Craig Hartsburg and the first order of business for the new head coach is getting his team to complete better down the stretch. Only the St. Louis Blues had fewer victories than Ottawa in last year’s final 39 games.
Another thing Hartsburg must get his team to do is play better defense. Jason Smith and Filip Kuba should help in that category, but stopper Martin Gerber will have to be at his best because while the two new additions on defense are tougher, they’re not necessarily faster.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Senators’ odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 18/1. Bodog has Ottawa at 16/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Senators a 20/1 shot.
Oddsmakers have also listed Ottawa as a 10/1 favorite to win the Eastern Conference this season.
The problem with the Senators last year certainly wasn’t offense. Ottawa scored 258 goals in 2007, which was the best in the NHL. But they also gave up nearly as many goals as they scored at 242 and their defense must improve if they’re going to make a run at the Stanley Cup this season. If the defense and special teams can improve, the Senators are going to be there in the end because their offense is that good. But they must play an entire season. This could be a great sleeper team if things come together defensively.
