Team Staal takes goalie Ward first
RALEIGH, NC (AP) – Eric Staal stayed at home with the first pick in the inaugural NHL All-Star fantasy draft by taking goalie Cam Ward, his teammate on the host Carolina Hurricanes.
With Sidney Crosby sidelined by a concussion, the first pick in Friday night’s draft for the All-Star game on Sunday was a complete mystery. The odds-on favorites were two-time NHL MVP Alex Ovechkin and Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos.
But Staal went away from the script and grabbed Ward, citing the fact they won the Stanley Cup together in 2006. The All-Star game is hardly a showcase for goalies, but Team Staal will certainly have the home fans on their side.
Nicklas Lidstrom, the captain of Team Lidstrom, grabbed Stamkos with the second pick. Ovechkin then went third to Team Staal.
