Can the Minnesota Wild overcome the loss of free agent Brian Rolston to make a postseason run this year? Oddsmakers have established the Wild’s odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 25/1.
The Wild not only lost Rolston to free agency, but the club is also having massive trouble trying to sign superstar winger Marian Gaborik to a new contract. If the two sides can’t come to an agreement soon, it looks like GM Doug Risebrough is going to have to consider traing the 26-year old stud player.
If Gaborik is dealt, the onus will be on youngsters Mikko Koivu, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and James Sheppard to carry the load. It’s not a bad trio considering Koivu scored 42 points, Bouchard 63 points and Sheppard 19 points last season, but that’s a lot of pressure of such a young group.

Oddsmakers from online sports book SBG Global have listed the Wild’s odds to win the 2009 Stanley Cup at 25/1. Bodog has Minnesota at 25/1, while Sportsbook.com gives the Wild a 25/1 shot.
If the club can make Gaborik happy by the star of the season, a lot changes for the Wild. If they can sign him by opening night, then this team could make some noise this year based on talent alone. Not only is Gaborik a superstar, but stopper Nikklas Backstrom finished with a .920 save percentage last year and offers the Wild with one of the best goaltending situations in a goalie-stacked Northwest Division. And the addition of Marek Zidlicky to go along with Brent Burns gives Minnesota a faster defense. Keep tabs on the Gaborik-situation, because this team could do some damage this year if they can ink him to a new contract.
