DENVER (AP) -Ryan Smyth was taken off the ice on a stretcher after Los Angeles defenseman Jack Johnson checked him into the glass at the end of the Avalanche’s bench late in the second period Saturday night.
The Avalanche reported that Smyth was conscious and walking, but was sent to a hospital for further examination.
The Colorado forward lay motionless on the ice for several minutes as trainers rushed out to attend to him.
Smyth was skating up the left side of the rink and was checked by Johnson just after dumping the puck into the zone. He rammed his head into area where the glass begins just after the Colorado bench. No penalty was called on Johnson.
Smyth scored two goals in the period before the hit, his 13th and 14th goals of the season. It was only his ninth game back after missing 18 with a broken ankle.
