-Thomas Vanek, Sabres, scored in the final minute of overtime to give Buffalo a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay.
-Martin Biron, Flyers, stopped 38 shots and Philadelphia held off Boston 2-1.
-Ilya Kovalchuk and Vyacheslav Kozlov, Thrashers. Kovalchuk scored a tie-breaking goal early in the third period and set up two power-play scores by Kozlov to lead Atlanta to a 3-2 win at Chicago.
-Brad Boyes, Blues, scored twice and St. Louis defeated Washington 4-3.
-Vernon Fiddler, Predators, scored a pair of goals to lead Nashville to a 4-3 win over Florida.

ANOTHER SCARY HIT
Boston center Patrice Bergeron was taken from the ice on a stretcher Saturday after losing consciousness when he was hit from behind by Philadelphia defenseman Randy Jones. Bergeron and Jones were chasing a loose puck when Bergeron took the hit in the back and hit the glass face-first. Bergeron was diagnosed with a broken nose and a concussion. This is the third incident involving a Flyers player this season. Steve Downie was suspended 20 games after a hit to Ottawa forward Dean McAmmond’s head in an exhibition game. Then on Oct. 10 in Vancouver, Jesse Boulerice cross-checked Ryan Kesler in the mouth, resulting in a 25-game suspension.

The New York Rangers have recorded just three goals in their last four games, including Saturday night’s 4-1 loss to Toronto, and are the NHL’s lowest-scoring team with 16 tallies. … Washington has scored more than three goals just once this season and has had two or fewer in all but three of its 10 games. The Capitals’ 4-3 loss to St. Louis on Saturday night was their sixth in seven games following a season-opening three-game winning streak.

Dallas’ Mike Modano had a goal and an assist in Saturday night’s 5-3 win at Phoenix to move within three points of the NHL record for American-born players. It was his first two-point game of the season.
GETTING TO KNOW YOU
Both victories for Montreal rookie goalie Carey Price have come at the expense of Pittsburgh. Price defeated the Penguins in his NHL debut on Oct. 10 before outlasting them in the Canadiens’ 4-3 shootout win on Saturday night.

Carolina’s Rod Brind’Amour had three goals and an assist in Saturday night’s 8-3 win over the New York Islanders, giving him six tallies and 16 points during his nine-game streak.
PLAYING LIKE KINGS
Los Angeles has won five of six following a 1-5 start after a 4-1 win over Edmonton on Saturday night. One key to the surge has been the play of goalie Jason LaBarbera, who has allowed just four goals in his last four appearances.

Chicago rookie Jonathan Toews had an assist in a 3-2 loss to Atlanta on Saturday night to extend his point streak to nine games. Toews, who missed the Blackhawks’ first two games with a broken finger, has a point in each contest he’s played so far. … Columbus is off to its best start in franchise history at 6-3-1 after a 2-1 win over San Jose on Saturday.

Alexander Semin signed a two-year, $9.2 million contract extension with the Washington on Saturday. The 23-year-old right wing set career highs in goals (38) and assists (35) last season with the Capitals.
