HAPPY RETURNS
Oiler forward Dustin Penner, who helped the Ducks win the Stanley Cup last season, returned to face his former teammates for the first time Sunday night as Edmonton beat the defending champs 3-2 in a shootout. Penner, who was presented with his Stanley Cup ring by Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli and general manager Brian Burke after the game in coach Randy Carlyle’s office, was lured away from Anaheim with a five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet that Burke declined to match.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME
Colorado posted a 3-1 win over Minnesota Sunday night. The win improved the Avalanche to 5-0 at home for the first time since moving to Colorado in 1995.
SCORING
Detroit left wing Henrik Zetterberg extended his lead atop the NHL scoring list to 21 points with an assist in the Red Wings’ 3-2 win over Vancouver Sunday night. Zetterberg, second on the team in scoring (68) despite missing 19 games to injury, Zetterberg has a point in all 12 games this season. Zetterberg’s linemate, center Pavel Datsyuk, who also had an assist against the Canucks, extended his point streak to seven games (2 goals, 7 assists).
