GET SHORTY

NICE DEBUT
Hours after being claimed off waivers by Phoenix, Ilya Bryzgalov posted his third career shutout with 28 saves in the Coyotes’ 1-0 win at Los Angeles on Saturday. Bryzgalov played his first 69 regular-season NHL games with Anaheim, winning a Stanley Cup ring last season as Jean-Sebastien Giguere’s backup.
UNLIKELY SOURCES
The New York Rangers got all four of their goals from defensemen Saturday night, including Jason Strudwick’s overtime winner that gave them a 4-3 win at Pittsburgh. Former Penguin Michal Rozsival scored twice and Dan Girardi had the other. The Rangers won their fourth in a row on the road after starting 0-5-1 away from Madison Square Garden.

KOIVU KO’D
Minnesota center Mikko Koivu will miss about a week with a cracked left fibula, the result of a stick-swinging hit by Vancouver’s Mattias Ohlund on Friday night. Koivu was whistled for an elbowing penalty in the third period and was injured when Ohlund responded by swinging his stick and slashing Koivu on the left leg. The action could earn Ohlund a suspension from the NHL, which has been cracking down on hits deemed unnecessary or dirty.
SPEAKING
“It is sort of one of those feelings where you go in the room and can’t believe you lost. We weren’t able to get two or three goals and get a big lead. They hung around, and it went to a shootout and anything can happen.” – Nashville coach Barry Trotz after Saturday night’s 3-2 loss to St. Louis.
