UNLIKELY SOURCE
Chicago’s Dustin Byfuglien, playing his 47th NHL game, became the third defenseman in team history to score three goals in a game during Friday night’s 6-1 win over Phoenix. It was first done by Dick Redmond in 1977 and matched by Doug Wilson in 1991. Byfuglien, who scored all three goals in the first period, had only seven career tallies coming into the game.
STREAKS OVER
New Jersey’s Jay Pandolfo and Pittsburgh defenseman Sergei Gonchar both had their consecutive games streak snapped Friday night after sitting out with groin injuries. Pandolfo played in 307 straight games before his injury Wednesday night against Dallas, while Gonchar’s was halted at 105.
GOING WILD
Marian Gaborik scored for the third straight game and has five goals in his last five contests after tallying the overtime winner in Friday night’s 3-2 win over St. Louis. Also in that game, Brian Rolston set a franchise record by scoring 9 seconds into the second period, bettering Gaborik’s previous mark of 12 seconds set last February. It was Rolston’s first goal in 10 games.
RUDE HOSTS
Anaheim has just one win in its last 15 appearances in Edmonton after Friday night’s 5-1 loss to the Oilers.
DEVIL OF A TIME
New Jersey has won six straight overall and nine in a row against Montreal after Friday night’s 4-0 victory over the Canadiens. Zach Parise had his first three-goal game, and Martin Brodeur stopped all 27 shots he faced for his 94th career shutout while improving to 34-12-5 lifetime against the Habs.
SUSPENDED
Phoenix defenseman Ed Jovanovski was suspended one game by the NHL on Friday for a blow to the head of Wild forward Marian Gaborik during a 3-1 loss in Minnesota on Wednesday night.
SIDELINED
Ottawa defenseman Anton Volchenkov may be sidelined up to a month because of a broken right index finger. Volchenkov was hurt during Ottawa’s 6-5 loss to Nashville on Thursday night, the Senators’ fifth straight defeat.
DAMAGES AWARDED
A jury awarded $9.5 million Friday to the family of former Chicago Blackhawks star Keith Magnuson in a wrongful-death lawsuit against former NHL player Rob Ramage, whose drunken driving accident left Magnuson dead. Magnuson was a passenger in the rental car driven by Ramage that was involved in a head-on collision in suburban Toronto as the men were returning from a funeral on Dec. 15, 2003. Magnuson died at the scene. He was 56.
SPEAKING
“The other night I played pretty well and got nothing. Tonight, I played horrible and got a couple of goals.” – Carolina captain Rod Brind’Amour after scoring twice in Friday night’s 4-3 win over Washington.
