SCARY MOMENT
Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson injured his hip and was forced out of the Thursday night’s game against Carolina early in the second period. Alfredsson, Ottawa’s leading scorer with 29 goals and 60 points, took one shift in the middle period before leaving the game because of a hip flexor injury. He didn’t return.
TIGHT RACE
Dallas moved into a second-place tie with San Jose in the Pacific Division with its 4-2 victory over the Sharks on Thursday night. Both were a point behind division-leading Anaheim, which improved to 7-0-1 in its last eight after holding off Nashville 2-1 on Thursday.
LONG NIGHT
Washington had its second-longest shootout in team history Thursday night, needing 12 rounds to beat Edmonton 5-4. The Capitals had a 15-round shootout defeat at the New York Rangers on Nov. 26, 2005. The Oilers lost for just the third time in 14 shootout sessions this season.
MILESTONE
Vancouver’s Markus Naslund played in his 1,000th game Thursday night at Detroit and scored his 16th goal in the 3-2 shootout loss.
SNAPPED
Toronto halted a six-game road losing streak with a 3-2 shootout victory at Boston. The Maple Leafs, who won for the third time in 10 games, had been outscored 39-19 during that span. Toronto allowed fewer than three goals for the first time in 11 games. … Detroit avoided a fourth straight loss after outlasting Vancouver 3-2 in a shootout.
STREAKING
Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf earned an assist in Thursday night’s 2-1 win over Nashville, stretching his point streak to 12 games. He is five games shy of Teemu Selanne’s franchise record. J.P. Dumont assisted on the lone Predators goal to push his scoring streak to a career-high 10 games and tie Steve Sullivan’s franchise record. Dumont has seven goals and eight assists during that span. … Shane Doan has a nine-game scoring streak after collecting a goal during Phoenix’s 4-3 loss to Columbus. He has during six goals and eight assists during the run.

Calgary’s Jarome Iginla and Tampa Bay’s Lecavalier were chosen Thursday to be captains at the NHL All-Star game Jan. 27 in Atlanta. Iginla is a Western Conference All-Star for the fourth time, and Lecavalier is set to make his third appearance for the East squad.

Goalie Curtis Joseph signed a $1.5 million, one-year contract with Calgary on Thursday. The 40-year-old goaltender agreed to terms Monday, but the Flames waited until Joseph passed a physical before making the announcement. He’ll earn about $650,000 for the rest of this season. Joseph is 446-341-95 in NHL regular-season games with St. Louis, Edmonton, Toronto, Detroit and Phoenix.
SURGERY
Colorado center Paul Stastny had surgery to remove his appendix Thursday and will miss up to three weeks, including his first All-Star game on Jan. 27. Stastny, the team’s leading scorer, felt pain in his abdomen Thursday, and the team’s medical staff determined he needed the appendectomy, trainer Matthew Sokolowski said. … Mark Bell will be out another eight weeks after Toronto forward had surgery on Wednesday to repair facial fractures.
MAKING MOVES
Chicago signed center Patrick Sharp to a four-year contract extension and acquired right wing Craig Adams from Carolina for future considerations Thursday. Sharp already has career highs with 22 goals and 36 points in his third season with the Blackhawks. He leads the NHL with seven short-handed goals – three shy of the team record – and nine short-handed points. Adams, who had been with the Hurricanes since 2000, had two goals and three assists this season.
SENTENCED
Former NHL player Rob Ramage was sentenced to four years in prison for a 2003 crash that killed ex-Chicago Blackhawks player Keith Magnuson. Magnuson, 56, died at the scene when a rental car driven by Ramage slammed head-on into another car north of Toronto. In October, a jury found Ramage guilty on all five charges he faced, including impaired driving causing death.
