THE REPLACEMENTS
Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin was one of five players chosen Tuesday as All-Star replacements for this weekend’s festivities in Atlanta. The announcement came hours after the Penguins said star Sidney Crosby – the league’s reigning MVP and scoring champion – will be out six-to-eight weeks with a high ankle sprain. Joining Malkin on the East squad is Boston goalie Tim Thomas, a surprise replacement for New Jersey starter Martin Brodeur, who must miss the game because of a family obligation that has come up. Defenseman Scott Niedermayer and forward Corey Perry from Anaheim were added to the West team, as was Dallas forward Mike Ribeiro. Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg withdrew, along with Colorado forward Paul Stastny and Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov.
EXTENDED VIEWING
Versus has picked up an option to televise NHL games for three more years. Terms of the deal were not immediately available. The cable network, formerly known as OLN, began televising NHL games during the 2005-06 season. It paid $65 million for the first year, $70 million for the second, and exercised a $72.5 million option for this season.
REWARDED
Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov has signed a three-year contract extension with Phoenix, the young team he has helped become a winner this season. A league source, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the club does not make salaries public, said the deal is worth $12.75 million. Acquired off waivers from Stanley Cup-champion Anaheim last Nov. 17, Bryzgalov has appeared in 28 games for the Coyotes, going 16-10-2 with a 2.33 goals against average.

Chris Campoli of the New York Islanders will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this week. Campoli, in his third NHL season, dislocated his shoulder last week during the Islanders’ victory at New Jersey. New York secured another defenseman on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with Freddy Meyer on a two-year deal.
