Mats Sundin’s 21st goal of the season, the game-winner with 29.2 seconds left, tied him with Maurice Richard for 24th on the NHL’s career list with 544. Toronto edged Washington 3-2 Wednesday night. Alexander Ovechkin scored his league-leading 39th for the Capitals, his sixth straight game with a goal.

St. Louis extended its winless streak to six games and fell to just 14-0-2 when leading in the third period following a 3-2 shootout loss at Vancouver on Wednesday night.

Atlanta forward Ilya Kovalchuk was suspended for one game without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for a hit from behind on Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival, keeping the Thrashers star out of the rematch with New York on Thursday night. Kovalchuk has 37 goals and 26 assists in 51 games this season.
