LONG NIGHT
Colorado and Phoenix embarked on the longest shootout in the history of both teams Friday night, going into the 12th round before the Avalanche escaped for a 3-2 win. Each team scored twice in the shootout before Cody McLeod converted his attempt for the win.
WINGS CLIPPED AGAIN
Detroit dropped to 1-6-1 in its past eight games and first without All-Star defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom after a 1-0 loss at Calgary on Friday night. Lidstrom sprained his knee Monday.
JUST DUCKY
Anaheim improved to 8-1 since the return of Teemu Selanne with a 2-1 overtime win over St. Louis on Friday night. Selanne’s second goal in as many games tied the game at 1 in the third period.
DRILLING THE OILERS
Dallas has won 10 of 12 against Edmonton and improved to 22-4-2 at home against the Oilers since moving from Minnesota in 1993 after a 5-2 victory on Friday night. Stars goalie Marty Turco improved to 15-4 against Edmonton and helped Dallas win for the 10th time in 12 games overall.
FLAME HEATING UP
Calgary’s Alex Tanguay had the only goal in a 1-0 win over Detroit on Friday night and has three goals in two games that followed a 16-game goalless drought.
ACTIVATED
Colorado forward Paul Stastny, sidelined five weeks after an appendectomy, was activated Friday before the Avalanche’s game in Phoenix and scored in the 3-2 shootout win. Stastny had his appendix removed Jan. 17, and missed 15 games. He also missed the NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta.
SHORT-HANDED SABRES?
Buffalo center Michael Ryan will miss a few weeks because of a groin injury, and coach Lindy Ruff is concerned about several others – including Thomas Vanek – who missed practice Friday. Without identifying the injuries, Ruff said he’s uncertain whether Vanek and fellow forwards Derek Roy, Jochen Hecht and Paul Gaustad can play Saturday when the Sabres host the New York Rangers.
EXTENSION HUNTERS
Trent Hunter signed a five-year, $10 million contract extension with the New York Islanders on Friday. Hunter, who has eight goals and 32 points this season, will earn $2 million per season through 2012-13.
SPEAKING
“I’ve witnessed a couple of those on TV but in person it’s tough on the system.” – Colorado coach Joel Quenneville after his team went into the 12th shootout round before finally defeating Phoenix 3-2 on Friday night.
