FORGETTABLE RECORD
Philadelphia matched a franchise record with its 10th straight loss Saturday night, 2-1 in overtime to Florida. The Flyers allowed the tying goal with 3.7 seconds left in regulation before yielded the power-play game-winner with 1:16 left in the extra session. They dropped to 0-8-2 during their skid, matching the mark they suffered last season when they were the worst team in the NHL.
GAINING THE HONOR
Montreal retired the No. 23 of former captain Bob Gainey before Saturday night’s game against Columbus, the 14th player to have such an honor in team history. The Hall of Famer spent his entire 16-season playing career with the Canadiens, and his 1,160 games played trail only Henri Richard for the most by a forward in franchise history.
SUNDIN SENDOFF?
Mats Sundin scored in what could have been his final home game as the Toronto captain in Saturday night’s 3-1 win over Atlanta. It was the Maple Leafs’ game at Air Canada Centre before Tuesday’s trade deadline and Sundin is expected to meet agent J.P. Barry in Ottawa on Sunday to discuss the no-movement clause in his contract that interim GM Cliff Fletcher wants him to waive. In 970 career games with the Maple Leafs, Sundin has 413 goals, 558 assists and 971 points.
PAYBACK
Ottawa rallied from three goals down and retained first place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 4-3 victory at Pittsburgh on Saturday. The comeback was reminiscent of the Penguins’ 6-5 Thanksgiving night win in Ottawa in which Pittsburgh twice rallied from two-goal deficits. … Chris Drury returned to Buffalo for the first time since the Sabres’ former co-captain signed with the New York Rangers in July and was booed every time he touched the puck. But he had an assist in the Rangers’ 4-3 win.
LEAD SLIPPING
Detroit fell to 1-7-1 in its last nine games after falling at Vancouver 4-1 on Saturday night. The Red Wings’ lead atop the NHL standings has now been trimmed to six points over Dallas after the Stars defeated Nashville 6-3 on Saturday.
SNAPPED
Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin had his 10-game point streak end in a 4-3 overtime loss to Ottawa on Saturday. He had 30 points as the Penguins went 9-4-2 in their first 15 games without injured star Sidney Crosby. … New York Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr ended a 12-game goalless drought in a 4-3 win at Buffalo.
BRICK WALL
Columbus’ Pascal Leclaire made 30 saves for his ninth shutout of the season in a 3-0 win at Montreal on Saturday night. It was Leclaire’s 10th career shutout and first since Jan. 24 when he stopped 30 shots in a 1-0 win over Chicago.
HOME COOKING
Carolina won for the sixth time in its last seven home games by defeating Washington 6-3 on Saturday.
RUDE GUESTS
Boston finished its five-game road trip with a 4-0-1 mark after defeating Tampa Bay 5-3 on Saturday night.
ZACH ATTACK
Zach Parise scored for the fifth straight game on Saturday, the tiebreaking goal in the third period that propelled New Jersey to a 4-2 win over the New York Islanders. The Devils broke a six-game skid to New York and ended the Islanders’ season-best, six-game winning streak.
KING-SIZED RALLY
Los Angeles overcame a four-goal deficit in the final 11 minutes of regulation before losing to Chicago 6-5 in overtime on Saturday. On Nov. 10 at Staples Center, the Kings scored four goals in a 5:07 span of the third period to erase a three-goal deficit and beat Dallas 6-5 on Anze Kopitar’s overtime goal. Los Angeles has outscored opponents 18-7 in the third period over the last 13 games.
SPEAKING
“I never believed in rental players to start with. I think if you want to be part of the team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup or a team that is going far in the playoffs, my opinion has always been that you want to be there from training camp or the start of the season to be part of the group.” – Mats Sundin on whether he wants to remain in Toronto with Tuesday’s trade deadline looming.
