SWINGS
Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin, who hadn’t scored in seven previous games, had a hat trick in the first period and added two assists later Monday night in a 10-2 rout of Boston. Ovechkin became the league’s first 50-goal scorer this season and now has 52.

STATUS
Peter Forsberg had his first practice Monday with Colorado since re-signing last week. His playing status for Tuesday against Vancouver will be a game-time decision. The Avalanche lost right wing Marek Svatos for the season Saturday night with a torn ACL, while left wing Ryan Smyth suffered a concussion and a minor shoulder separation after Kings defenseman Jack Johnson checked him into the padded glass partition near the Colorado bench.
SPEAKING
“It’s really tough to take. It was embarrassing. On the other hand, what’s the difference? If you lost 3-2 or you lost like that, we’re still in the playoffs as of now. You definitely should learn from it, but you can’t get too far down.” – Boston goalie Tim Thomas, who allowed seven goals in a 10-2 loss to Washington on Monday night.
