ALEXANDER THE GREAT
Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin scored two more goals in a 3-1 win at Buffalo on Wednesday night, giving him five in two games and a league-leading 54 this season. His 10th multigoal game this season helped him surpass his previous career high of 52 goals set in his rookie campaign of 2005-06. Dennis Maruk holds the team record of 60 in 1981-82.
LUCKY SEVEN
San Jose pushed its winning streak to seven games by rallying for a 3-2 overtime win over Ottawa on Wednesday night. The Sharks, who won for just the third time in 23 games this season when they trailed after two periods, moved one point past Anaheim and within three points of first-place Dallas in the Pacific Division standings.
HOT-LANTA
Eric Staal scored twice in Carolina’s 6-3 win over the Thrashers on Wednesday night, giving him seven goals and 10 assists in 14 career regular-season games at Atlanta.
ON THE PROWL
Phoenix, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002, crept within three points of Nashville and Vancouver for eighth place in the Western Conference after defeating Dallas 2-1 on Wednesday night. The Coyotes have scored just 10 goals in their past seven games, yet have gone 3-3-1 during that span.
MEMORABLE FIRST
Chicago’s Corey Crawford picked up his first NHL win and shutout on Wednesday night, making 19 saves in a 3-0 win over defending-champion Anaheim.
SOUR NOTES
St. Louis has lost seven of its last eight games after falling at Detroit 4-1 on Wednesday night.
SUSPENDED
Florida suspended left wing Chad Kilger on Wednesday, only a few days after obtaining him in a trade from Toronto. Shortly after the Panthers obtained Kilger for a third-round draft pick late last month, Kilger asked Florida for a leave of absence, which was granted. The Panthers apparently expected him back by now, and the suspension is without pay.
THANK YOU
Dave Zenobi, the Florida Panthers’ trainer who helped save right wing Richard Zednik’s life after his neck was slashed by a skate blade, will be honored Thursday night. Zenobi will receive the ADT Good Sport Award, in recognition of his work in the moments immediately following Zednik’s injury in Buffalo on Feb. 10. Zednik’s carotid artery was slashed by the skate of teammate Olli Jokinen, who fell headfirst to the ice.
SPEAKING
“I don’t know what else you guys can write about him, but he’s the best I’ve ever played with.” – Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig on Alexander Ovechkin, who scored two more goals in Wednesday night’s 3-1 win at Buffalo and leads the NHL with 54.
