LONDON CALLING
The NHL opened its season on the banks of the River Thames in London on Saturday, and as far as the Los Angeles Kings were concerned, this was hockey country. The Kings got two power-play goals from Mike Cammalleri and one from Rob Blake in a 4-1 victory over the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks – the first time the NHL played a regular-season game in Europe. This is the fourth time the league has opened its season outside North America, the other times in Japan (1997, 1998 and 2000). The two California teams will play the second game of their series Sunday.
SIGNED
Center James Sheppard signed with the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, meaning the 2006 first-round draft pick will be on the ice opening night instead of returning to his junior team in Nova Scotia. The 19-year-old had 33 goals and 63 assists in 56 games with Cape Breton of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season. He was the ninth overall pick in 2006 and has one assist in three preseason games for the Wild this year.
SPEAKING
“I don’t remember taking a boat up a river to get to the game very often. But that was our format tonight.” – Kings defenseman Rob Blake, speaking about his trip to O2 Arena in London on Saturday. The NHL opened its season on the banks of the River Thames, and Los Angeles defeated the defending champion Ducks 4-1.
