UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -Maxim Afinogenov scored with 2:17 left in the third period, just as Buffalo’s sixth power play ended, and Ryan Miller made 42 saves to lift the Sabres to a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Wednesday night.
After five failed Buffalo advantages, Afinogenov took a cross-zone pass from Brian Campbell in the right circle. With a knee down on the dot, Afinogenov got just enough of the puck to send it past the right arm of Rick DiPietro.
That helped Buffalo win its fourth straight and sent New York to its seventh loss in eight games (1-6-1) despite a 43-17 shots advantage. Derek Roy also scored for the Sabres, who split the four-game series after losing twice to the Islanders in the first two games of the season.
The Islanders tried to pull this one out hours after forward Chris Simon was suspended for an NHL-record 30 games.
Defenseman Brendan Witt tied the score for New York at 3:50 of the third period.
Red Wings 6, Kings 2
DETROIT (AP) – Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary each had a goal and an assist to lift Detroit.
The Red Wings, who have won 10 of their last 11 games, improved to a league-best 25-6-3. Los Angeles (12-21-2), which lost its fifth straight, has the NHL’s worst record.
Jiri Hudler, Tomas Holmstrom, Johan Franzen and Valtteri Filppula got the Red Wings’ other goals. Niklas Kronwall had four assists for his career-high point total and Dominik Hasek made 18 saves.
Dustin Brown and Patrick O’Sullivan scored for the Kings, and Jason LaBarbara stopped 29 shots.

CHICAGO (AP) – Robert Lang and Patrick Sharp each scored two goals, and Chicago handed Nashville its fifth straight loss.
Dustin Byfuglien also scored for the Blackhawks, who ended a two-game losing streak and won for only the second time in their last eight. Martin Havlat had three assists.
Sharp’s first goal was his league-leading sixth short-handed. The Blackhawks lead the all NHL teams with 11 short-handed scores. Nikolai Khabibulin made 19 saves for Chicago.
J.P Dumont and Radek Bonk had power-play goals for the Predators, who have lost seven of their last eight.
Nashville starting goalie Chris Mason was pulled early in first period after allowing goals on the first two shots he faced. He was replaced by Dan Ellis, who stopped 25 of 28 shots.
Ducks 2, Avalanche 1, OT
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – Chris Pronger scored the tying goal early in the third period and Mathieu Schneider got the game-winner with 1:29 left in overtime to lead Anaheim.
Jonas Hiller faced just 12 shots in his fifth start of the season for the Ducks while Jean-Sebastien Giguere got the night off after posting his first shutout of the season.
Chris Kunitz carried the puck into the zone on a 2-on-1 rush and fed a cross-ice pass to Schneider, whose wrist shot beat Avalanche goalie Peter Budaj high to the glove side as Milan Hejduk floped on his stomach in an attempt to block it.
Hiller faced only five shots before Cody McCormick converted Ian Laperriere’s pass from behind the net at 8:33 of the second period.
Anaheim had 38 shots after being held to just 16 in Tuesday’s 2-0 win at San Jose.
