NEW YORK (AP) -Jaromir Jagr assisted on New York’s three power-play goals in the first period as the Rangers busted out with the man advantage and handed the Washington Capitals their first loss of the season, 3-1 Friday night.
In what looked like a mismatch, the Rangers brought in an anemic power-play unit that had failed in all 15 chances over the season’s first three games. Washington hadn’t allowed a power-play goal in 12 short-handed situations while jumping to a 3-0 start.
That all changed quickly as Scott Gomez, Martin Straka and defenseman Michal Rozsival connected in the first period when the Rangers were handed six power-play chances.
Alex Ovechkin answered Gomez’s tally with his 100th career goal in just 167 NHL games. That briefly tied it for the Capitals before Straka and Rozsival put New York back in control during a period in which the Rangers outshot Washington 20-7.
Henrik Lundqvist was steady while seeing 25 shots for the Rangers (2-2).
Olie Kolzig made 38 saves for the Capitals.
Blackhawks 3, Red Wings 2
DETROIT (AP) – Robert Lang scored the tiebreaking goal in the third period against his former team, helping the Blackhawks get the road win.
Brent Seabrook had a goal and an assist, and Patrick Sharp scored for Chicago, which trailed 2-0 after the first period. Lang also had an assist, and Nikolai Khabibulin made 32 saves.
Henrik Zetterberg and Kris Draper scored for Detroit, which lost in regulation for the first time this season. Dominik Hasek stopped 26 shots.
Lang, who signed with the Blackhawks as a free agent during the summer, converted a power-play chance 9:19 into the third. His one-time slap shot from the top of the left circle bounced in off Hasek’s shoulder and gave Chicago a 3-2 lead.
Blues 4, Avalanche 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Dan Hinote scored two goals in the third period, and goalie Manny Legace made 24 saves to improve his career mark against the Avalanche to 12-1.
Brad Boyes scored his fourth goal for the Blues, who extended their winning streak to three games and are 3-1-0 for the first time since 1997-98. Jay McClement had the other St. Louis goal and Paul Kariya picked up an assist, giving him six this season.
Colorado’s Jose Theodore, who made 19 saves, fell to 0-4 lifetime against the Blues. Paul Stastny scored his fifth goal for the Avalanche.
With the game tied at 1 early in the third, Theodore stopped Lee Stempniak but the puck came to McClement. His first shot was stopped, but McClement put in his own rebound to make it 2-1 at the 4:57 mark. Hinote scored just over a minute later, and again at 15:59 to put it away.
Flames 3, Stars 2, OT
DALLAS (AP) – Matthew Lombardi scored twice, including the overtime winner, and Calgary rallied for its first victory of the season.
Lombardi took possession of the puck deep in the Dallas zone after a turnover by Stars captain Brenden Morrow. He then beat Dallas goaltender Marty Turco at 3:20 of overtime.
Jerome Iginla also scored for the Flames (1-2-1), and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 24 shots.
Mike Modano’s goal for Dallas moved him within four points of matching Phil Housley’s record for U.S.-born players, and Niklas Hagman continued his strong start with another goal.
Hagman’s power-play goal from the left circle at 9:05 of the second was his fifth goal in five games, giving Dallas a 2-1 lead. But Lombardi skated up the left side and picked his first goal of the season at 10:46 of the third period to tie it at 2.
Turco made 23 saves for the Stars (2-2-1).
Canucks 5, Oilers 2
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – Alex Burrows scored a short-handed goal in the second period and Vancouver rebounded from a poor outing two days earlier with a victory over the Oilers.
Canucks center Ryan Kesler was in the lineup just one game after being cross-checked in the face by Philadelphia’s Jesse Boulerice on Wednesday. Boulerice received a 25-game suspension Friday, the longest single-season ban in NHL history, for the incident.
Henrik Sedin, Rick Rypien, Markus Naslund and Brendan Morrison also scored for the Canucks, who were called out by general manager Dave Nonis for their poor play following an 8-2 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Sheldon Souray and Raffi Torres scored for Oilers, who have lost three straight after opening the season with two wins.
Bruins 8, Kings 6
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Phil Kessel scored three goals for his first career hat trick and Boston beat Los Angeles in the only meeting between the teams this season.
Kessel also had an assist and Marc Savard scored the go-ahead midway through the third period. Savard also had three assists.
Aaron Ward also scored for Boston, Milan Lucic got his first NHL goal and Glen Murray added a power-play goal before setting up the game-winner. Manny Fernandez recorded his first victory with the Bruins.
