NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias scored in the shootout to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.
The first two shooters, Clarke MacArthur for Buffalo and Zach Parise missed. Ales Kotalik beat Martin Brodeur with a backhander before Gionta countered.
That set the stage for the third round where Brodeur made a stick save on Thomas Vanek before Elias won the game by ripping a shot past Ryan Miller.
In regulation, Andy Greene scored a first-period power play goal for the Atlantic Division-leading Devils who won for the 10th time in their last 11 games at the Prudential Center.
The latest victory came at the expense of the skidding Sabres, who dropped their seventh straight. It is Buffalo’s worst slump since a seven-game losing streak Dec. 4-19, 2003.
Jason Pominville scored for the Sabres with 1:47 remaining to force the overtime.
Hurricanes 1, Bruins 0
BOSTON (AP) – Cam Ward stopped 19 shots for his third shutout of the season and Eric Staal scored the only goal to lead the Hurricanes over the Bruins.
The win was just the third in eight games for Carolina, which played its second straight 1-0 game after losing in St. Louis on Saturday. It was the Hurricanes’ first 1-0 victory of the season.
Tim Thomas made 27 saves for Boston. It was the Bruins’ first home shutout since Colorado beat them 2-0 last March.
Flyers 4, Thrashers 1
ATLANTA (AP) – Jeff Carter scored two goals within a span of 13 seconds in the second period and the Flyers beat the Thrashers for the eighth straight game.
Scott Hartnell added the 100th goal of his career with one second left in the period for a 4-1 lead. Hartnell’s short-handed goal came off a pass from James Dowd.
Hartnell had two assists, including one to set up the Flyers’ first goal, by Steve Downie, only 32 seconds into the second period.
Ilya Kovalchuk’s league-leading 35th goal midway through the opening period gave the Thrashers a 1-0 lead.

DETROIT (AP) – Dominik Hasek made 19 saves for his second consecutive shutout, and 79th of his career, and Pavel Datsyuk scored the game’s only goal to lift the Red Wings over the Avalanche.
Hasek has a 134-minute, 13-second scoreless streak for league-leading Detroit, which has 18 wins in its last 21 games.
The game also marked a milestone for Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios, who became the second-oldest player to appear in a NHL game. At 45 years and 348 days old, Chelios passed Moe Roberts, who played for the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov. 25, 1951, at 45 years, 347 days.

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) – Ty Conklin made 27 saves to remain unbeaten in eight starts this season, and the Penguins extended their longest winning streak in nine years to seven games by beating the Panthers.
The game was scoreless until midway through the second period, when the Penguins scored three times in 3:06 with Sidney Crosby contributing a goal and an assist.
Panthers coach Jacques Martin then replaced goalie Tomas Vokoun with Craig Anderson. Vokoun came in with a .920 save percentage, but stopped only 20 of 23 shots.

Lightning 5, Rangers 3
NEW YORK (AP) – Chris Gratton broke out of a season-long scoring slump with two goals and an assist, and Tampa Bay snapped a seven-game losing streak by holding off the Rangers.
The Lightning had gone 0-5-2 following a win over Toronto on Dec. 20 that ended a 1-4-1 skid. Tampa Bay is last in the Eastern Conference with 37 points, and only Los Angeles has fewer in the NHL.
Defenseman Doug Janik and Vaclav Prospal also scored for the Lightning, who led 4-1 late in the second period before they nearly gave it away with a series of penalties.

The Blues, who last scored six goals in a 6-2 win over Anaheim on Jan. 16, 2007, got another strong game from goalie Manny Legace. He hadn’t allowed a goal in a team-record 185 minutes and 35 seconds before Rick Nash took a Joakim Lindstrom pass from the right side and beat Legace for his 22nd goal of the season.
