NEW YORK (AP) -Dany Heatley and the surging Ottawa Senators took care of the New York Rangers in record-setting time.
Heatley scored the first of Ottawa’s three goals in a team-record 52 seconds of the middle period Saturday night, and Martin Gerber made 36 saves to lift the Senators to a 3-1 victory over the Rangers.
Chris Phillips and Patrick Eaves followed Heatley by scoring in an overpowering minute for the Senators, who won for the sixth time in seven games this season – including two victories over the Rangers in a week.
The game turned quickly just over a minute into Chris Drury’s delay-of-game penalty, the second called against New York in the second period.
Heatley scored his sixth goal of the season at 8:23. The goal announcement hadn’t been made by the time Phillips made it 2-0 only 17 seconds later, ripping in a shot from the top of the left circle.
The agitated crowd was still voicing its displeasure when Rangers defenseman Marek Malik fumbled the puck at the left point in the Ottawa zone and lost it to Eaves, who streaked the other way. Eaves beat Henrik Lundqvist with a hard drive to complete the scoring barrage at 9:15.
Sabres 7, Capitals 3
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Derek Roy and Jaroslav Spacek scored two goals each to help Buffalo beat Washington.
Ryan Miller, coming off a 6-0 win over Atlanta, had 23 saves for Buffalo.
Maxim Afinogenov added a goal and an assist, and Jason Pominville and Adam Mair also scored for the Sabres, who have won two straight after dropping their first two games of the season.
Mike Green and Michael Nylander each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington, which lost its second straight after opening the season 3-0.
Washington goalie Brent Johnson finished with 46 saves in a losing effort.
Hurricanes 3, Canadiens 1
MONTREAL (AP) – Cory Stillman and Matt Cullen scored power-play goals and Carolina spoiled the Canadiens’ home opener.
Cam Ward made 23 saves for Carolina, which has won three straight road games in Canada since losing the opener of its current six-game trip.
Montreal’s Chris Higgins scored his first goal of the season 1:12 in to kick off the Canadiens’ 98th home opener.
Stillman scored during a 5-on-3 advantage in the first, and Cullen scored the go-ahead goal 19:26 into the middle period.
Chad Larose scored into an empty net at 19:44.
Panthers 6, Lightning 4
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) – Olli Jokinen had a goal and two assists to tie Scott Mellanby for Florida’s career scoring lead in the Panthers’ victory over Tampa Bay.
Jokinen, in his seventh season with the Panthers, has 156 goals and 198 assists for 354 points with the team.
Nathan Horton, Ruslan Salei, Stephen Weiss, Richard Zednik and Jozef Stumpel also scored for the Panthers, who handed Tampa Bay its first loss of the season.
Vaclav Prospal had two third-period goals for Tampa Bay, which started the day as one of two unbeaten teams in the league along with Minnesota. Andre Roy and Jan Hlavac had the other Lightning goals.
Flyers 3, Islanders 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jeff Carter and Sami Kapanen each scored goals, and Martin Biron made 29 saves to lead Philadelphia over New York.
Jason Smith scored an empty-net goal for the Flyers with seconds left in the game.
Jofferey Lupul’s shot from the circle was knocked in by Carter for his third goal of the season and a 1-0 lead at 6:37 in the second period.
The Flyers struck again only 2 minutes, 9 seconds later when Kapanen slid a backhand past DiPietro for his second goal and a 2-0 lead.
Josef Vasicek scored on a slapshot from the circle for the Islanders, a shorthanded goal early in the third that made it 2-1.
Devils 6, Thrashers 5
ATLANTA (AP) – Patrik Elias scored two goals, including one on a power-play one with 27 seconds left to help New Jersey beat winless Atlanta.
Ilya Kovalchuk’s second goal of the game with 3:20 left in the third period tied the game at 5-5. Garnet Exelby was then called for a holding penalty, allowing the Devils to play with a man-advantage.
Elias then scored the game-winner to help goalie Martin Brodeur earn his first victory of the season.
Trailing 4-2, midway through the second period, the Devils rallied on goals by Jay Pandolfo, and Travis Zajac.
Sergei Brylin broke the tie with a tip-in.
The Devils opened strong, scoring first on a tip-in by John Madden less than 2 minutes into the game. After rookie Darren Haydar answered for Atlanta with his first NHL goal, New Jersey took a 2-1 lead on a tip-in by Elias.
Penguins 6, Maple Leafs 4
TORONTO (AP) – Sidney Crosby scored his first two goals of the season, including the winner with 5:22 left in the third period, to lead Pittsburgh to a wild victory over Toronto.
On the deciding goal, Crosby banged a loose puck into an empty net after goalie Vesa Toskala stopped Darryl Sydor’s point shot on a power play only to have the puck trickle behind him to Crosby. It was the lone power-play goal of the night.
Maxime Talbot added a pair of goals, and Ryan Malone and Erik Christensen also scored to help the Penguins improve to 2-2-0.
Jason Blake, Mats Sundin, Nik Antropov and Darcy Tucker replied for the Maple Leafs, who dropped to 2-3-1.
Flames 7, Predators 4
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Kristian Huselius scored two goals, and Flames captain Jarome Iginla had a goal and an assist to help Calgary beat Nashville.
The teams traded first period power-play goals. Daymond Langkow scored for the Flames, and Alexander Radulov answered for the Predators.
The first period gave way to a wild second period in which the teams combined for six goals, one of which was a short-handed goal from Calgary’s Matthew Lombardi.
J.P. Dumont scored the final goal of the second period with just 16 seconds remaining.
The Flames owned the third period, getting goals from Eric Godard, Iginla, and Huselius. Iginla’s goal was the end of the night for Nashville goalie Chris Mason. Mason was pulled in Wednesday’s loss at St. Louis as well.
Blackhawks 2, Stars 1, OT
CHICAGO (AP) – Jason Williams scored a power-play goal 43 seconds into overtime for the Blackhawks, who rallied to tie the game with seconds remaining in regulation.
Williams beat Tobias Stephan on a high shot from 40 feet out, with Chicago rookie Jonathan Toews cutting across the crease. Stephan was screened on the shot.
Chicago’s Robert Lang deflected in Toews’ shot with 1.5 seconds left in the third period to tie it 1, ruining Stephan’s shutout bit in his first NHL game.
Dallas’ Brenden Morrow scored a power-play goal in the first period.
Avalanche 5, Blue Jackets 1
DENVER (AP) — Joe Sakic got his 15th career hat trick and Colorado beat Columbus.
The 38-year-old team captain scored twice in the third period, helping the Avalanche pull away. He scored a power-play goal 1:21 into the final frame, and then added his fourth goal of the season with 9:22 left when he beat Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire with a shot from the right circle.
Milan Hejduk had two goals and an assist, and Peter Budaj had 24 saves for Colorado.
Rostislav Klesla scored the only goal for Columbus, tying the game early in the second period.
Wild 3, Coyotes 2
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Eric Belanger scored a short-handed goal late in the third period and Minnesota rallied past Phoenix.
Belanger knocked in the rebound from a Stephane Veilleux backhander at 16:45. That came just more than three minutes after Mikko Koivu tied the game for Minnesota with 6 minutes, 20 seconds remaining.
The Wild scored first when Marian Gaborik converted a perfect centering pass from Pavol Demitra at 4:09 of the opening period.
Daniel Carcillo scored twice for Phoenix.
Canucks 4, Oilers 1
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Henrik Sedin set up twin brother Daniel for two goals 2:18 apart in the second period to break open a close game and help Vancouver beat Edmonton.
Henrik Sedin added his third assist on Taylor Pyatt’s goal in the third period, and Brendan Morrison also scored for the Canucks, who have beaten the Oilers seven straight times.
Andrew Cogliano’s short-handed goal broke up Roberto Luongo’s shutout with 7:39 left. It was too late for the Oilers, who have lost four straight since starting the season with two wins.
Luongo finished with 27 saves.
Bruins 2, Sharks 1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Aaron Ward scored with 12 seconds left, just moments after San Jose had tied the game, and Boston ruined the Sharks’ home opener.
Patrice Bergeron scored early and Tim Thomas recorded 26 saves to help the Bruins win in San Jose for the first time in eight years.
Thomas, appearing in his third game of the season, nearly recorded his fifth career shutout until Milan Michalek scored with 38 seconds left in the third period.
Bergeron won the puck in the corner and flipped it to Marco Sturm, who cleared it to the top of the right faceoff circle, where Ward shot it past a startled Evgeni Nabokov.
