BOSTON (AP) -Zdeno Chara and Phil Kessel scored shootout goals for the Boston Bruins, who rallied for a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday.
Chuck Kobasew had two goals in regulation for Boston, which led 2-1 through 40 minutes before the Rangers took a one-goal advantage in the third period.
Rangers captain Jaromir Jagr scored a goal and helped set up two others, but it wasn’t enough to keep New York from its fifth straight road loss (0-3-2).
Tim Thomas stopped both Rangers shots in the shootout and 36 through overtime.
Scott Gomez had a goal and an assist, and Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves for the Rangers, who lost both matchups with the Bruins in Boston during shootouts. Sean Avery also scored.
The Original Six rivals will meet again Sunday afternoon in New York.
Red Wings 6, Sharks 3
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Kris Draper scored a short-handed goal, and Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom added power-play tallies in a penalty-filled second period that helped Detroit Red Wings win their sixth straight game over San Jose.
Niklas Kronvall, Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary also scored for the NHL-leading Red Wings, who have won back-to-back games following a rare three-game losing streak. Dominik Hasek made 15 saves.
It was another rough night in front of the home crowd for the Sharks, who have won just nine of 24 games at HP Pavilion this season.
Rookie Devin Setoguchi, Steve Bernier and Jonathan Cheechoo scored for San Jose.
Stars 3, Blue Jackets 1
DALLAS (AP) – Mike Smith made 29 saves for Dallas, which snapped Columbus’ four-game winning streak.
Smith, Marty Turco’s backup, hadn’t played in five of six games. He kept the Stars afloat in the second period when the Blue Jackets dominated with a 14-2 shots advantage but scored only once.
Brenden Morrow, Stu Barnes and Steve Ott scored for the Stars, 4-2-1 in their last seven games.
Dallas has won all three meetings with Columbus this season, the first two in shootouts. The teams will play for the fourth and final time Tuesday in Dallas.
Nikolai Zherdev scored for the Blue Jackets.
Predators 5, Blues 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Scott Nichol scored a pair of short-handed goals in Nashville’s victory over St. Louis.
J.P. Dumont, David Legwand and Jason Arnott also scored for the Predators, who beat the Blues for the first time this season in four tries. Jarred Smithson assisted on both of Nichol’s goals. Chris Mason made 24 saves.
The Blues dropped their fourth in a row (0-3-1) and have been outscored 21-9 during the skid. Andy McDonald and Brad Boyes had goals, and Paul Kariya recorded two assists.
Nichol scored each of his goals in the second period when the Predators broke open a 2-1 game and grabbed a four-goal lead.
Blackhawks 2, Coyotes 1, SO
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Patrick Lalime had 38 saves, then blocked all three attempts in a shootout to lead Chicago to its fourth consecutive victory.
It was the second 2-1 shootout victory in two nights for Chicago. The Blackhawks won by the same score Friday night at Colorado.
Patrick Kane and Martin Havlat scored in the shootout against Phoenix goalie Ilja Bryzgalov, and the Blackhawks clinched the victory when Lalime got his third straight block, on a shot by Peter Mueller, who earlier scored Phoenix’s lone goal.
The Blackhawks tied it with 4:04 left in the period while the Coyotes’ Daniel Winnik was serving the last 28 seconds of a double-minor penalty for high-sticking. Brent Seabrook’s one-timer from the left circle sailed past the right shoulder of Bryzgalov into the net.
Flyers 5, Islanders 3
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) – Scott Hartnell’s third power-play goal snapped a tie, completed his second New York hat trick of the month, and carried Philadelphia to a comeback win over the Islanders.
Hartnell, who also scored three goals on Jan. 10 in a win at the New York Rangers, got the Flyers even 3-3 just 54 seconds into the final period. Mike Richards added an insurance goal at 12:11, and Steve Downie also scored for the Flyers, 9-1-2 in their last 12 games.
Martin Biron earned his 17th win with 28 saves, bolstered by Hartnell’s third NHL hat trick. Hartnell staked Philadelphia to a 1-0 lead at 5:21 of the first period before the Islanders scored three straight to go up 3-1 before the break.
The Islanders got goals from Richard Park, Josef Vasicek and Bill Guerin but have dropped three straight home games for the first time this season. New York has also lost three consecutive to the Flyers.
Penguins 2, Canadiens 0
MONTREAL (AP) – Dany Sabourin made 31 saves for his second shutout, Jeff Taffe scored in the first period, and Pittsburgh won its first game without injured Sidney Crosby.
Sabourin, who got his first career shutout in a 5-0 win in New Jersey on Nov. 5, made his first appearance since Dec. 21 one night after Ty Conklin took his first regulation loss in his 11th straight start.
The Penguins were 0-2-2 in the four previous games Crosby had missed since he began his NHL career at the start of the 2005-06 season.
Taffe scored his second goal of the season 6:14 in when he beat Cristobal Huet on a setup by Penguins enforcer Georges Laraque. Evgeni Malkin scored into an empty net with 12.4 seconds remaining.
Montreal, which returned from a 3-1 road trip, fell to 8-8-5 at home.
Lightning 2, Senators 0
OTTAWA (AP) – Martin St. Louis scored the winning goal, during a power play, and Johan Holmqvist made 25 saves in Tampa Bay’s victory over Ottawa.
The shutout was the second in two nights for Holmqvist and the Lightning following a 3-0 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh on Friday. Holmqvist was busy in the second period when the Senators had 12 shots on goal.
Vincent Lecavalier scored into an empty net with 12 seconds left.
Ray Emery made 24 saves for the Senators.
Ottawa played without its two leading scorers, Daniel Alfredsson (hip), and Dany Heatley (separated shoulder).
Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 2
TORONTO (AP) – Alex Steen and Nik Antropov each had a goal and an assist, and Toronto held on for its third straight win.
Jason Blake and Alexei Ponikarovsky also scored for the Leafs (19-21-8).
It’s only the second time this season the Leafs have won at least three straight. They had a four-game run from Nov. 29-Dec. 6.
Daniel Paille and Jochen Hecht scored for Buffalo, which was down 3-0 before scoring twice to make it interesting. After ending a 10-game losing streak (0-5-5) Friday night with a 10-1 rout of Atlanta, the Sabres had less jump and fell to 1-6-5 in their last 12 games.
Toronto’s Vesa Toskala stopped 26 shots for his third straight win.
Capitals 5, Panthers 3
WASHINGTON (AP) – Rookie center Nicklas Backstrom had a career-high four assists, Viktor Kozlov scored two goals, and surging Washington beat Florida to reach the .500 mark for the first time in nearly three months.
Alex Ovechkin had a goal and an assist for the Capitals, who climbed past Florida into third place in the Southeast Division. Washington took a 3-0 lead in the opening 12 minutes, then let the Panthers draw even before Alexander Semin put the Capitals ahead for good with a power-play goal at 12:17 of the second period.
Ovechkin added his 36th goal with 15:20 left, Washington’s third of the game with the extra man.
The Capitals have won three straight to improve to 21-21-5; the last time they were at .500 was Oct. 24 (4-4). Washington is 15-7-4 since coach Bruce Boudreau took over on Nov. 22.
Shawn Matthias, a 19-year-old center playing in his second NHL game, scored his first two goals for Florida. Olli Jokinen had a goal and an assist.
Kings 4, Canucks 3
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Jason Labarbera stopped 43 shots and Los Angeles built a three-goal lead and then hung on to beat Vancouver.
The Kings netminder robbed Henrik Sedin and then Taylor Pyatt from point blank range on the first shift of the game, then turned around and stopped Alexandre Burrows on a breakaway the next shift.
Jack Johnson, Scott Thornton and Dustin Brown scored to give the Kings a 3-0 lead.
Vancouver came back with two goals before the second period was over. Brad Isbister and Trevor Linden both beat Labarbera.
Alexander Frolov’s 10th of the year restored the Kings two-goal lead with 7:40 to play in the third period.
