SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -Jeremy Roenick scored the winner in the fifth round of the shootout, and Evgeni Nabokov stopped four of Chicago’s five attempts to seal the San Jose Sharks’ 10th consecutive win over the Blackhawks, 3-2 Saturday.
Nabokov made 19 saves in regulation for the Sharks, who earned their fourth victory in five games with regulation goals from Jonathan Cheechoo and Marc-Edouard Vlasic.
Nikolai Khabibulin, who’s winless in 10 straight appearances since Dec. 26, made 37 regulation saves, but couldn’t prevent Roenick from lifting a shot over his pads in the fifth round. Nabokov then stopped Cameron Barker to win San Jose’s opener in a six-game homestand.
Duncan Keith tied it for Chicago early in the third period, moments after Vlasic put the Sharks ahead with his first goal of the season. Patrick Sharp also scored for the Blackhawks, who are winless in four straight.
Canadiens 4, Islanders 1
MONTREAL (AP) – Alex Kovalev had a goal and an assist, and Montreal scored three times in the second period.
Mark Streit scored a power-play goal 7:32 into the middle period to give Montreal a 2-1 lead. Kovalev, who assisted on Tomas Plekanec’s short-handed goal 37 seconds into the second, gave the Canadiens their third goal of the period with his team-leading 23rd at 12:35.
Cristobal Huet stopped 29 shots in his 11th straight start for Montreal, which has won six of eight (6-1-1).
Mathieu Dandenault scored late in the third period after he was a healthy scratch for the Canadiens’ last four games.
Blake Comeau scored his third goal 5:01 into the second for New York, which lost its fourth in a row.
Devils 6, Kings 3
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – Light-scoring defenseman Colin White had a goal and an assist to help New Jersey end a three-game losing streak.
David Clarkson, Patrik Elias, Karel Rachunek, Travis Zajac and Sergei Brylin also scored as the Devils got goals from six players while Martin Brodeur made 23 saves.
Brian Boyle, Jack Johnson and Lubomir Visnovsky had goals for the Kings, who were 5-1-1 in their previous seven road games.
Red Wings 3, Bruins 1
BOSTON (AP) – Pavel Datsyuk scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, Chris Osgood made 22 saves and Detroit won its seventh straight.
The Red Wings have won seven or more games for the third time this season. They won a season-high nine straight from Oct. 18-Nov. 9, and also won seven in a row Nov. 27-Dec. 13.
Henrik Zetterberg scored his team-leading 31st goal for Detroit, and Brian Rafalski added a power-play score with 5:58 left in the game.
Chuck Kobasew scored his a team-leading 19th goal for Boston. Thomas made 29 saves for the Bruins, who lost for just the second time in seven games.
Thrashers 2, Capitals 0
WASHINGTON (AP) – Kari Lehtonen had 36 saves in his third shutout of the season, and Atlanta won despite playing without leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk and mustering only 13 shots on goal.
Todd White broke up a scoreless duel with 8:26 left, beating Olie Kolzig with a shot between the circles after taking a centering pass from Mark Recchi. Marian Hossa added an empty-net goal with 40 seconds remaining.
The loss ended Washington’s five-game home winning streak.
Wild 4, Blue Jackets 1
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Marian Gaborik scored twice and Brian Rolston scored a goal in his fifth straight game to lead Minnesota.
The Wild pulled away from a 1-1 tie with three second-period goals in less than 6 minutes.
Gaborik had his sixth multigoal game of the season and lifted his season total to 28.
Kurtis Foster also scored, Pavol Demitra had two assists and Niklas Backstrom had 33 saves for the Wild, who won their third in a row.
Derick Brassard, Columbus’ top pick and No. 6 overall in the 2006 draft, scored his first NHL goal.
Flyers 3, Ducks 0
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Mike Knuble scored three straight goals, Martin Biron made 27 saves for his third shutout and Philadelphia improved to 13-3-1 since it was in last place on Christmas.
Knuble had his first hat trick in 707 career games.
The defending Stanley Cup champion Ducks have lost six straight since going 8-0-1, including a 1-0 shootout loss at St. Louis on Friday night. Anaheim hasn’t scored in seven periods and one overtime.
Maple Leafs 4, Senators 2
TORONTO (AP) – Carlo Colaiacovo and Jason Blake scored third-period goals and the Toronto didn’t commit any penalties.
Dominic Moore and Jiri Tlusty also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Vesa Toskala stopped 19 shots.
Nick Foligno and Chris Neil had the Senators’ goals, and Ray Emery made 22 saves. Ottawa was whistled for six penalties – three on Andrej Meszaros – all in the first two periods.
Toronto, which entered the game 28th in the league on the power play, was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
Panthers 3, Lightning 2
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Richard Zednik scored the go-ahead goal with 1:05 left in the third and Tomas Vokoun made 44 saves to lead Florida.
Zednik’s 10th goal of the season came on an in-close rebound. Olli Jokinen had pulled the Panthers even at 2 on a power-play goal from the slot at 14:04 of the third.
Jay Bouwmeester also scored for the Panthers.
The Lightning got goals from Chris Gratton and Vinny Prospal. Rookie Karri Ramo had 29 saves.
Penguins 3, Hurricanes 1
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and set up two others during Pittsburgh’s offensive breakout in the third period, and the Penguins took advantage of another strong game by goaltender Ty Conklin.
Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist as Pittsburgh scored on four of its first nine shots in the third against Cam Ward after the Carolina goalie stopped all 18 shots he faced in the first two periods.
Erik Christensen and Ryan Malone also scored for Pittsburgh, which got yet another effective game from Conklin, who started the season in the minors. Conklin made 27 saves and didn’t allow a goal after Sergei Samsonov scored his fourth at 8:27 of the first period.
