PHILADELPHIA (AP) -Matt Bradley and Viktor Kozlov scored 64 seconds apart early in the third period to lead the Washington Capitals over the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3 on Wednesday night.
NHL scoring leader Alex Ovechkin got his league-best 46th goal and Brooks Laich also scored for the Capitals, who moved into first place in the mediocre Southeast Division.
Mike Knuble, Sami Kapanen and Randy Jones scored for Philly. The Atlantic Division-leading Flyers lost for only the fourth time in regulation in 19 games since they were in last place on Christmas.
On a night former Flyers goaltender Ron Hextall became the 19th person inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame, Biron struggled for the first time since losing to New Jersey on Jan. 4. He had been 5-0 in his last seven appearances.
Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig stopped 31 shots to beat the Flyers for the sixth time in eight decisions.
Sabres 3, Devils 2 SO
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Drew Stafford and Henrik Tallinder scored consecutive goals in the shootout to lift Buffalo to its fifth win in six games.
tafford beat New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur with a wrist shot in the first round of the shootout, and Tallinder followed with a nifty deke. Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller denied Brian Gionta’s wrist shot in the second round to give the Sabres their second straight win.
Michael Ryan and Jason Pominville scored in regulation for the surging Sabres.
Karel Rachunek and Mike Mottau scored for the Devils, who had their two-game winning streak snapped. New Jersey also lost for the first time in four games on the road.
Oilers 4, Blackhawks 1
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) – Joni Pitkanen had a goal and an assist, and Edmonton won its second straight.
Jarret Stoll, Dustin Penner and Ethan Moreau also scored for the Oilers, who moved within five points of eighth place in the Western Conference.
Patrick Sharp had the only goal for the Blackhawks, who have lost five in a row.
Avalanche 3, Sharks 1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Ben Guite and T.J. Hensick scored on graceful deflections, and Jose Theodore returned from injury to make 30 saves for Colorado.
Brett Clark’s shots were redirected to score both early goals for the Avalanche, who split their four-game season series with San Jose by holding on through a one-sided third period. After the Avalanche survived an exhilarating 80-second barrage by the Sharks with their goalie pulled, Jeff Finger added an empty-net goal in the final second.
Theodore, who missed Colorado’s last three games with back spasms, made a handful of outstanding saves to preserve his sixth win in nine starts.
Captain Patrick Marleau scored and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 shots for the Sharks.
