WASHINGTON (AP) -John Madden backhanded a rebound under goalie Brent Johnson’s pad with 50 seconds remaining in overtime, and the New Jersey Devils moved into the first place in the Eastern Conference with a 2-1 victory Sunday over the Washington Capitals.
Martin Brodeur, making his 22nd consecutive start, made 37 saves for the Devils, who have won five straight and seven of eight to move ahead of idle Ottawa in a crowded race for the conference’s top seed.
Jamie Langenbrunner scored on a 5-on-3 power play early in the third period for the Devils. Alexander Semin tied the game about two minutes later for the Capitals, who picked up a point but are struggling to keep pace with first-place Carolina in the Southeast Division.
Flames 2, Wild 1
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Daymond Langkow and Craig Conroy scored, Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 38 shots and Calgary replaced Minnesota atop the Northwest Division.
Calgary has beaten Minnesota four straight times.
Mark Parrish scored for Minnesota, which is winless in three straight. The Wild are 4-6 since Feb. 2, with their wins coming in overtime or a shootout.
The Wild held a six-point advantage six days ago, but now trail the Flames by a point in the Northwest Division.
Sharks 2, Penguins 1, SO
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Jeremy Roenick scored the winner as all three San Jose skaters were successful in the shootout and Jonathan Cheechoo had the Sharks’ only goal in regulation.
Roenick, Jonathan Cheechoo and Joe Pavelski got the puck past Ty Conklin on wrist shots, with Roenick putting his shot inside the post to Conklin’s stick side. Roenick is 3-for-3 on shootout attempts this season, but Cheechoo had been 0-for-3. Evgeni Malkin, who began the day as the NHL’s leading scorer with 82 points, went scoreless for the second successive day as Pittsburgh dropped to 9-4-4 without injured star Sidney Crosby
Eric Christensen, back after missing five games with a sore shoulder, scored a power-play goal for Pittsburgh.
