OTTAWA (AP) -Brendan Shanahan scored two goals and the New York Rangers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-2 Saturday, handing the Eastern Conference champions their sixth straight loss.
Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves for his NHL-leading 14th win. Jaromir Jagr, Dan Girardi and Blair Betts also scored for New York, which led 3-0 in the first period and went up by four goals before Joe Corvo and Dany Heatley scored for Ottawa.
Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson each had two assists for the Senators, who are on their longest skid since they dropped seven straight from Feb. 22-March 9, 1996.
Martin Gerber, who beat the Rangers 2-0 on Oct. 6, made his 19th start of the season but was replaced by Ray Emery after allowing three goals on 12 first-period shots.
Maple Leafs 4, Penguins 2
TORONTO (AP) – Mark Bell and Jason Blake scored long-awaited goals, and Mats Sundin broke an 83-year-old record as Toronto beat Pittsburgh.
Bell’s goal was his first with the Maple Leafs. Blake hadn’t scored since Oct. 18.
Sundin’s assist on Bell’s goal extended his point streak in home games from the start of the season to a club-record 15. Babe Dye’s mark of 14 had stood since the 1924-25 season.
Nik Antropov and Alexei Ponikarovsky, with an empty-netter with 58 seconds left, also scored for the Leafs, who have won two straight for the first time since Oct. 27.
Ryan Malone and Erik Christensen scored third-period goals for the Penguins after they had fallen behind 3-0.
Lightning 4, Bruins 1
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Vincent Lecavalier had two goals and an assist, helping Tampa Bay stop a six-game skid.
Lecavalier’s first goal of the game was the 250th in the NHL, coming in his 655th game. He has 16 goals and 39 points in 34 games against Boston.
Mathieu Darche and Martin St. Louis had the other goals for Tampa Bay.
Glen Murray scored for Boston, which lost for the second time in six games.
St. Louis extended the Lightning’s advantage to 4-1 with his first goal in six games, scored at 6:13 of the third. Lecavalier set up the goal for his 300th NHL assist.
Thrashers 4, Islanders 0
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) – Kari Lehtonen turned aside 33 shots in his first NHL appearance in six weeks, and Ilya Kovalchuk scored his NHL-leading 21st goal and added an assist in Atlanta’s win against the New York Islanders.
Lehtonen, who got his first shutout this season and eighth in his career, lost his first four decisions before being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury. He missed 16 games, dating to Oct. 18, before being recalled from AHL Chicago earlier Saturday.
Eric Boulton, Marian Hossa, and Vyacheslav Kozlov also scored for Atlanta, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
Wade Dubielewicz made just his second start in net for the Islanders and stopped 26 shots. Dubielewicz subbed for Rick DiPietro, who had made 18 straight starts. New York hasn’t scored more than two non-shootout goals in 12 games and is 5-6-1 in that span.
Sabres 8, Hurricanes 1
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Ales Kotalik had two goals, and Jaroslav Spacek had a goal and two assists to lift Buffalo over struggling Carolina.
Tim Connolly, Derek Roy and Maxim Afinogenov had a goal and assist each, and Adam Mair and Thomas Vanek also scored for the Sabres, who have won six of seven. Ryan Miller made 20 saves for Buffalo, which won for the fourth time in five home games.
Ray Whitney scored for Carolina, which lost for the sixth time in nine games. Whitney’s goal came with just 1:55 left in regulation, spoiling Miller’s shutout bid.
The Sabres scored twice in the opening 4 minutes, then followed that spurt with two more goals in a 56-second span late in the second period to break it open.
Carolina goalie John Grahame made his second start in four games. He finished with 17 saves.
Stars 4, Flyers 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Jussi Jokinen, Antti Miettinen, and Mike Ribeiro scored second-period goals to lead Dallas over Philadelphia.
Jeff Halpern also scored, and Trevor Daley and Brenden Morrow each had two assists for the Pacific Division leaders, who played tenacious defense in snapping a two-game losing streak.
Marty Turco had 17 saves for Dallas, which played its sixth game in nine days. The Stars had won six straight before losing at New Jersey and Pittsburgh.
Randy Jones scored for the Flyers, who had won two of three – beating division leaders Carolina and Ottawa. Marty Biron stopped 26 shots.
Capitals 2, Panthers 1
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) – Alex Ovechkin scored the go-ahead goal from a severe angle, Brent Johnson stopped 24 shots and Washington snapped a three-game skid by beating Florida.
Brian Pothier also scored for Washington, which lost its first three games against Florida this season by a total of three goals.
Branislav Mezei scored for Florida, which lost its second straight – both at home – following a season-high, four-game winning streak. Tomas Vokoun stopped 41 shots but gave up two soft goals. He was 5-1 in his previous six games.
Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2
DETROIT (AP) – Dan Cleary’s power-play goal completed Detroit’s third-period comeback, and Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist to lift the Red Wings past Phoenix.
Pavel Datsyuk also scored for NHL-leading Detroit, and Brian Rafalski had two assists. Chris Osgood made 24 saves.
Daniel Winnik, and Fredrik Sjostrom scored for Phoenix, and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36 shots.
Ilya Bryzgalov, in his seventh consecutive start, dropped his third straight decision after winning the first four once he was claimed off waivers from Anaheim. He was pulled on Friday night after allowing five goals on seven shots in the Coyotes’ 6-1 loss at Chicago.
Predators 5, Canadiens 4, SO
MONTREAL (AP) – Radek Bonk and Martin Erat scored in the shootout after Nashville erased a three-goal deficit in the third period.
Bonk, who tied the game with 46.8 seconds remaining in regulation, put a shot through Cristobal Huet’s pads on Nashville’s first shot. Erat put a shot over Huet’s glove to convert the Predators’ second attempt.
Backup goalie Dan Ellis, beaten by Saku Koivu on Montreal’s second attempt, pokechecked the puck away on Andrei Kostitsyn’s attempt to clinch the win which saw the Predators – who trailed 3-0 and 4-1 – score four times in the third.
Nashville scored three straight after falling behind 4-1 with 9:19 remaining to send the game to overtime.
Jed Ortmeyer scored a short-handed goal 8:40 into the third to draw the Predators to 3-1 before Montreal’s Guillaume Latendresse got his second of the game at 10:41 to restore the Canadiens’ three-goal margin.
David Legwand made it 4-2 with his seventh goal at 12:26 and Greg de Vries cut the margin when he scored for the second straight game at 16:55.
Blues 3, Blackhawks 1
ST. LOUIS (AP) – Lee Stempniak scored for the second straight night and Hannu Toivonen stopped 17 shots in St. Louis’ victory over Chicago.
Enforcer D.J. King and Mike Johnson also scored for St. Louis, which won its sixth straight at home and for the eighth time in 10 overall (8-1-1).
Robert Lang scored in the third period for the Blackhawks, whose two-game winning streak was snapped. It was his first goal in 11 games.
Former Blues goalie Patrick Lalime stopped 23 of 26 shots for Chicago.
Blue Jackets 4, Flames 3, OT
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) – Rookie forward Curtis Glencross scored his second of the game 2:03 into overtime and Columbus beat Calgary.
Kris Beech and Nikolai Zherdev also scored for Columbus, which went 1-2 on its trip to Western Canada.
Jarome Iginla, Daymond Langkow, and Adrian Aucoin scored for the Flames, who have lost four in a row and six of eight at home (2-5-1).
After its 2-0 lead was erased in the second period, the Blue Jackets regained a 3-2 advantage at 4:07.
Columbus’ Fredrik Norrena made 33 saves in his second straight start in place of NHL shutout leader Pascal Leclaire, who was out again due to a hamstring injury.
Avalanche 5, Kings 2
LOS ANGELES (AP) – Ryan Smyth broke open a tie game with a pair of third-period goals, and T.J. Hensick scored his first in the NHL, leading Colorado over Los Angeles.
Paul Stastny and Jaroslav Hlinka also scored and Jose Theodore made 17 saves for the Avalanche, who came in with the worst road record in the Western Conference and outshot the Kings 34-19.
Raitis Ivanans and Anze Kopitar scored for Los Angeles. The Kings haven’t scored more than three goals in their last nine games.
Avalanche captain Joe Sakic didn’t play because of a sore groin, ending his streak at 232 games.
