SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -The Florida Panthers claimed checking forward Garth Murray off re-entry waivers from the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
The Canadiens will be responsible for half of the remainder of Murray’s $625,000 salary for this season, and their share will count against the salary cap.
“Garth is a quality, character guy who competes hard every shift,” Panthers general manager and coach Jacques Martin said. “He is the type of player that will bring a competitive attitude and grit to our lineup every night.”
Murray, a physical, 6-foot-2, 210-pound left winger, dressed for only one game this season for Montreal. He missed six games due to a foot injury in October.
He was acquired in September 2005 from the New York Rangers for forward Marcel Hossa. In 100 career NHL games, he has eight goals and two assists.
Murray was placed on waivers last week and assigned to Hamilton of the AHL. He was waived Monday.
