ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -The Minnesota Wild re-signed popular enforcer Derek Boogaard on Wednesday to a multiyear deal.
The 6-foot-7 Boogaard had one assist and 120 penalty minutes for the Wild last season, worrying very little about scoring while patrolling the ice to look after his smaller teammates.
The 25-year-old Canadian played in 48 games last season and led the Wild with 20 penalty minutes in their first-round playoff defeat to Anaheim. With the Ducks pushing and shoving the smaller Wild players all over the ice in the series, and Brad May giving defenseman Kim Johnsson a concussion with a hit from behind in Game 4, Boogaard stalked the ice looking for a fight that never came, much to the delight of the home crowd.
“Derek’s development is a testament to his dedication, discipline and the emphasis he places on team above individual,” general manager Doug Risebrough said in a statement. “Through his style of play and his personality he has made himself a valued player and person in the organization.”
Next season will be Boogaard’s third with the Wild.
