ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -Winthrop basketball player DeAndre Adams died Wednesday, four days after sustaining head injuries in a car accident.
The 20-year-old guard had been in a coma since the accident Saturday. He was returning home to Austell, Ga., when his car left the road, flipped and hit a tree.
Winthrop athletic spokesman Jack Frost said in a statement that Adams had “taken a turn for the worse during the night.”
Adams had been in a drug-induced coma for four days at the Atlanta Medical Center before he died, the school said.
Adams, a sophomore, played in all 35 games last season, averaging 2.1 points, 2.8 assists and 1.1 rebounds.
He was competing in a summer league in Atlanta. Adams had dropped off one of his Winthrop teammates, Mantoris Robinson, at a relative’s house and was on the way home when the crash happened.
“He had a vibrant personality and he live his life with great passion and enthusiasm,” Winthrop coach Randy Peele said. “We will miss DeAndrew a great deal.”
Winthrop president Anthony DiGiorgio said he got to know Adams as a “lively, dedicated and bright young man.”
“We will miss all of that and the university community will miss the light that he shined upon us,” DiGiorgio said.
