ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) -Winthrop basketball player DeAndre Adams was in a coma in an Atlanta hospital after a car accident, coach Randy Peele said Sunday.
The 20-year-old backup guard was returning to his Austell, Ga., home when his car left the road, flipped and hit a tree about 4 a.m. Saturday.
Peele told The Herald in Rock Hill that he had been speaking with Adams’ father regularly since finding about the accident. Peele was on his way to Atlanta Medical Center on Sunday with assistant coach Paul Molinari.
“His father said there are no fractures, but he has a bruised liver,” Peele said. “But swelling of the brain is their big concern right now.”
Peele said Adams was in a drug-induced coma to keep him quiet while doctors work on reducing pressure in his skull.
“They’re trying to keep people out of his room,” Peele said. “He can apparently hear and is trying to react to what’s going on, and they’re trying to keep him from doing that.”
Adams was playing in a summer league in Atlanta. He had just dropped off another Winthrop player, Mantoris Robinson from Charlotte, N.C., at a relative’s house and was on the way home when he crashed.
“There was no foul play, nothing like that,” Peele said. “He just swerved and crashed.”
The rising junior played in all 35 Winthrop games this past season, including the Eagles’ first NCAA tournament win. He averaged 2.1 points and 1.1 rebounds.
“Right now,” Peele said, “nobody knows, but they’re saying he has two positives. He’s young and he’s an athlete. He’s resilient and he’s strong as a bull.”
