MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -Alabama State trustees removed the interim tag off former Hornets and NFL receiver Reggie Barlow to become the head football coach on Friday.
The 34-year-old Barlow had been the Hornets’ interim coach since Charles Coe resigned on March 26 to take a job with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders.
“It’s a great feeling,” Barlow said. “A lot of coaches go through their entire life, their entire career looking for their dream job. As of today, I have mine.”
Barlow spent the past two seasons as Alabama State’s quarterbacks coach, working with 2006 second-round NFL draft pick Tarvaris Jackson two years ago.
The school had not finished contract details, spokesman Kelvin Datcher said.
The Montgomery native set Alabama State records for receptions and receiving yards.
Barlow spent eight years in the NFL, playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Raiders.
“Alabama State has been great to me and my family,” Barlow said. “This is my opportunity to give back to all those who have been so good to me.”
