(STATS) – Charleston Southern named Notre Dame running backs coach Autry Denson as the fifth head coach in program history on Monday.
Denson, 42, played running back at Notre Dame from 1995-1998 and left as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 4,318 yards. He returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in 2015.
He previously coached at Bethune-Cookman and Miami of Ohio as well in the Florida high school ranks.
“This is a great day for Buccaneer football,” CSU athletic director Jeff Barber said. “Autry Denson is a special person in many ways and stands out as both a recruiter and a coach. More importantly, he cares about his players as people first and will, therefore, have great influence on their hearts and lives and will develop each of them into outstanding young men.”
Denson will be introduced at a campus news conference on Wednesday.
