(STATS) – Colgate coach Dan Hunt says he’s running out of words to describe his team’s defense.
Cornell might say “impenetrable,” “punishing,” even “phenomenal” after the Patriot League leader shut out the Big Red 31-0 in the 100th all-time meeting between the Upstate New York rivals on Saturday.
It was the third shutout this season by Colgate (6-0), the STATS FCS Team of the Week.
“We were just real resilient,” Hunt said. “Cornell did a nice job running the ball on us a little bit, particularly on first down in the first half. The defense was never rattled, never worried – nobody panicked. They came back and made the plays when they had to and got some key turnovers when they needed to.
“Again, just really solid fundamental defense and a good team win.”
Colgate, one of four unbeaten teams in the FCS, allowed Holy Cross to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of their season opener on Sept. 1. That’s the only quarter in which the Raiders have allowed more than a field goal. In fact, it’s the only time it has happened in the last 39 quarters dating to last season. They’ve surrendered a Division I-low 3.8 points per game.
Cornell ran 19 more offensive plays and held the ball 6 minutes, 46 seconds more than Colgate, yet the Raiders posted their first shutout in the series since 1919. Colgate’s linebacking trio of T.J. Holl (18), Nick Ioanilli (11) and Dillon Delullios (10) matched their career highs in tackles, while Ty Castillo returned his 11th career interception 58 yards for a touchdown.
Colgate Is plus-10 in turnovers and has allowed less than 249 yards per game.
