(STATS) – It appears unlikely former Eastern Washington quarterback Gage Gubrud will gain a sixth season of eligibility as a graduate transfer.
The Spokesman-Review reported Monday night the NCAA has denied Gubrud’s recent waiver request, adding the FCS’ single-season record-holder for passing yards would appeal the governing body’s decision.
Gubrud wants to extend his collegiate career as a graduate transfer at Washington State.
Last year, he suffered a season-ending toe injury in Eastern Washington’s fifth game Sept. 29 at Montana State. Prior to Gubrud to having surgery on Oct. 31, the Big Sky university announced the fifth-year senior’s college career was over, but only because he had exceeded the NCAA’s four-game redshirt rule in 2018.
The Eagles then won a share of the conference title and advanced in the FCS playoffs to the national championship game, where they lost to North Dakota State. A player can receive a medical redshirt if he’s played in one-third or fewer of his team’s games, and the title game was EWU’s 15th.
The problem likely standing in Gubrud’s way is that he didn’t suffer another long-term injury before his final season at Eastern Washington, having redshirted in 2014 during his first year on campus.
In his career, he passed for 9,984 yards, including a record 5,160 in 2016, and had 11,026 yards of total offense and 100 total touchdowns. He was a two-time finalist for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award.
Gubrud acknowledged during the week of the national championship game that his next step may be pursuit of a pro career, whether in the NFL or the CFL.
“I’m going to take advantage of what I have and I’m going to shoot for the stars,” he said. “My goal is to play in the NFL and be a quarterback in the NFL. I’m not going to lose that goal until it truly becomes not a possibility anymore. I’m pushing for that, I’m training for that and I’m working as hard as I can for that. We’ll see what happens.”
