(STATS) – Mike Houston will leave James Madison to take a coaching position at an FBS program, Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne announced Sunday.
The Dukes were eliminated from the FCS playoffs Saturday, when Colgate won 23-20 on a game-ending field goal. Earlier this week, the JMU athletic department confirmed that UNC Charlotte had offered its head coaching position to Houston.
Houston said he was interested in the position at the Conference USA school, but did not confirm or deny he had accepted it, saying his focus was on the Dukes’ second-round playoff game at Colgate.
Houston went 37-6 with the Dukes, including a national championship in his first season in 2016 and a runner-up finish last year.
“We are grateful to Mike Houston, his family and his staff for their commitment to JMU over the last three years,” Bourne said Sunday. “When we hired Mike, he was the right coach at the right time for our program. He injected energy, he went about his job the right way, he cared about our student-athletes and he won.”
