HOUSTON (AP) Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver says his sideline outburst at Cougars coach Major Applewhite was the result of a ”misunderstanding” and he looks forward to ”moving forward with his teammates.”
Houston released short statements from Oliver and Applewhite on Friday night.
Oliver said the way he acted Thursday night was ”not who I am.” He added he has ”the utmost respect” for Applewhite.”
Oliver angrily shouted at Applewhite as they walked off the field at halftime of Houston’s home victory against Tulane on Thursday night. Applewhite said later Oliver was upset because the coach had told the player to remove the black winter coat he was wearing on the sideline. Applewhite said the coats are reserved for active players.
Oliver has missed the last four games with a knee injury and was not in uniform against Tulane.
