1/10/2008 PGA Sony Open Free Picks from Brian Gabrielle

At this week’s Sony Open, take Stephen Ames (20-1),1/6 unit: Ames was first off the tee in 2008 and got a birdie. Nice way to start the year. He says he’s enjoying Hawaii and family time and for the most part he looked like he was also enjoying playing competitive golf. Most promising, he had seven birdies on Sunday for a 66. Like Weir, he looked like he was in midseason form.

Take Daniel Chopra (40-1), 1/6 unit: I’ve been big on Chopra for several years. I’d picked him many times in that span, including his win late last year. He’s got the goods and now knows how to win. It’s rare for golfers to win in consecutive weeks, which explains him coming in at 40-1. But that also makes him worth a shot. He’s the type of talent who could win several tournaments every year, maybe even back-to-back. Last year he was T28 at the Sony Open.

Take Chad Campbell (40-1), 1/6 unit: This is a good course for a methodical iron player like Campbell, which explains why he’s done well (T2 in ’06). Last year was listless but he played his best golf in the final two months of the season and he got off to the good start in Maui last week with a T12, his best finish at the season-opening Mercedes Championship.
