LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Black Monday is here in the NFL and coaches are already starting to receive their pink slips around the league.
On Monday morning the Jets fired both head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik following 4-12 seasons in New York. Ryan went 20-12 in his first two seasons with the Jets while playing in two straight AFC title games. But in the four seasons since then, he’s gone just 26-38 as the team failed to develop a quarterback during his time in New York.
Also on Monday the Bears cleaned house by firing coach Jim Trestman and GM Phil Emery. Trestman received just two years in Chicago before being axed with a 13-19 record. He was deemed somewhat of a quarterback guru when hired in 2013 but he failed to have a successful working relationship with Jay Cutler, who regressed in the second year under Trestman. Emery was also responsible for putting together one of the worst defenses in the league the past two years.
In Atlanta, the Falcons fired coach Mike Smith, who went 66-46 in seven years with the team. Despite his successful track record during the regular season, Smith was 1-4 in the playoffs and 10-22 over the last two seasons with the Falcons. Whether or not Thomas Dimitroff will be retained as general manager is uncertain, although he looks to be safe for now.
Finally, the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh agreed to part ways on Sunday night. He posted a 44-19-1 record across four seasons while reaching the NFC title game three times as well as an appearance in Super Bowl XLVII. Multiple reports have stated that Harbaugh will be named the next head coach at the University of Michigan on Tuesday.
