NEW ORLEANS, LA (The Spread) – The matchup for the 2012 BCS National Championship Game has not been set but if it were, oddsmakers have already installed the favorite.
A rematch between LSU and Alabama is the assumed matchup for the 2012 BCS title game and with that, oddsmakers listed the Tigers as 1.5-point favorites with the total opening at 40.5 points. Those numbers have already been bet up to LSU –2 and down to over/under 40.
But before LSU even thinks about playing ‘Bama in the title game, the Tigers have to get past Georgia at 4:00PM ET this Saturday in the SEC championship game. Granted, the Tigers could still appear in the BCS title game early next year if they lose to the Bulldogs this weekend, although BCS backers would then have to explain how a team that didn’t even win its conference is playing for a national championship.

Many people have scoffed at a potential LSU-Alabama rematch because of the low-scoring affair the two teams played back in early November. Some don’t want to see a repeat performance with a similar outcome, especially considering a lot of college football fans like offense. But with No. 3 Oklahoma State losing to Iowa State two weeks ago and Stanford losing to an Oregon team that lost to USC (a team Stanford beat two weeks before losing to Oregon), there may not be a better alternative.
If LSU and Alabama are on a collision course for the 2012 BCS National Championship, at least bettors know which team will be favored so they can start breaking down the rematch now.
