MIAMI, FL (The Spread) – Oddsmakers have adjusted the Miami Marlins’ 2012 World Series odds following the acquisition of free agent Jose Reyes.
There have been several reports over the last 24 hours that have Reyes agreeing to a six-year, $106 million deal with the Marlins. The deal is pending a physical and assuming there are no hiccups, Reyes will be the starting shortstop in Miami next season. Hanley Ramirez will now shift to third base.
The Marlins opened as 30/1 long shots to win the 2012 World Series and while the signing of Reyes hasn’t made them favorites, oddsmakers have adjusted Miami’s championship odds. The Marlins are now sitting at 20/1 to win the World Series, which is a significant change based off one signing.
For comparison’s sake, the Phillies are 5/2 favorites to win next year’s Fall Classic, while the Yankees and Red Sox are both 6/1, respectively. The 2011 World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals are 15/1 to win next year’s title, while the 2010 World Series champion San Franicsoc Giants are 15/1 as well. The World Series runner-up the past two years, the Texas Rangers, actually have better odds than the Cardinals and Giants at 8/1.
Reyes is the first major signing of the 2011-12 MLB offseason. With baseball’s winter meetings starting this week, there should be more free agent deals to come soon. Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder, C.J. Wilson and Carlos Beltran are just some of the big-name free agents that are available this winter.
