NFL Betting News: Will Cam Newton play vs. Browns in Week 16?

CHARLOTTE, NC (The Spread) – The Panthers look to keep their NFC South title hopes alive this Sunday with a win over the Browns but will they have their starting quarterback?

Cam Newton was a full participant in Thursday’s practice according to Steve Reed and is “on target” to start Sunday’s game against the Browns. Barring a setback, coach Ron Rivera said he expects Newton to “probably” start over Derek Anderson, who led the Panthers to a win last week over the Buccaneers.

Newton suffered a back injury in a car accident early last week, which forced him to miss the game against Tampa Bay. The injury was reportedly similar to the one Cowboys’ signal-caller Tony Romo suffered earlier this year in a loss to the Redskins. Romo missed one game, was limited in a win over the Jaguars in London, then had two weeks to rest the injury when Dallas had its bye week in Week 11.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Panthers are 3-point home favorites over the Browns for Sunday’s game. Carolina opened as 3.5-point favorites before the line was bet down, although the number could climb back up closer to kickoff.
