MIAMI, FL (The Spread) – The Palm Beach Post hears from sources that Mike Wallace signing with the Dolphins is essentially a “done deal.”
Multiple media outlets including ESPN and Sports Illustrated have reported that the Dolphins would pursue Wallace when free agency started on Tuesday at 4:00PM ET. But this is the first report that has suggested a deal is already done.
Miami and Wallace are clearly a fit with the Dolphins desperate to acquire offensive playmakers, especially at the wide receiver position. The 26-year-old racked up 4,042 receiving yards on 235 receptions with 32 touchdowns in his four seasons with the Steelers, but he fell out of favor in Pittsburgh last year after complaining about his contract and holding out the majority of training camp. He didn’t report until August 28th and then failed to improve upon his 72-reception, 1,193-yard effort in 2011.
The Dolphins drafted their franchise quarterback in Ryan Tannehill last April, but Brian Hartline was the team’s leading receiver in 2012. After re-signing Hartline to a new contract late last week, Miami wants to invest more cap space in improving the offense. Although the Vikings have reportedly entertained pursuing Wallace, the Dolphins are equipped to get into a bidding war thanks to an abundance of cap space.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Dolphins are currently 50/1 long shots to win the 2014 Super Bowl. While Wallace would be a huge get, their odds aren’t likely to dramatically change immediately following the signing. But that could change depending on how the public and oddsmakers few their entire offseason.
