SAN FRANCISCO, CA (The Spread) – Despite recent reports, the 49ers don’t have a deal lined up to trade Alex Smith.
According to CBS’ Jason La Canfora, the 49ers have “expressed to others” that a trade involving Smith is “effectively complete.” Any potential trade cannot be finalized until the new league year begins on March 12, but La Canfora wrote that the Jaguars and Chiefs make the most sense in terms of trade partners.
Following the report, Jaguars GM David Caldwell told the Florida Times Union that Jacksonville is not on the verge of acquiring Smith. The Cleveland Plain Dealer also reported that the Browns are not the team on the verge of acquiring Smith, either.
The Sacramento Bee has since reported that the Niners do not have a trade in place for Smith. The paper also states that the team is still shopping the veteran quarterback, who was replaced by Colin Kaepernick during the regular season following a concussion suffered versus the Rams.
Smith signed a three-year, $24 million contract back in March of 2012. He’s owed $7.5 million, plus a $1 million roster bonus due next month, and $7.5 million in 2014. With Kaepernick now entrenched as the starter following the team’s run to the Super Bowl last season, it makes sense for the Niners to want to move Smith this offseason.
