(The Spread) – Free agency is right around the corner in the NFL but there are plenty of intriguing storylines to follow until then.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Falcons are likely to release running back Michael Turner at some point this offseason. He’s owned $6.9 million after rushing for just 3.6 yards per carry during his age-30 season. He failed to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for just the second time since 2007 and while he’s been one of the more productive backs over the past five years, his best days are clearly behind him.
Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reports that the Chiefs appear to be the most interested in 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who is still under contract for one more year in San Francisco. New coach Andy Reid will be installing the West Coast Offense in Kansas City and Smith’s skill set make him a fit, but the Chiefs will have to acquire him via trade.
In other quarterback-related news, Schefter reported on NFL Live on Friday that Kevin Kolb’s future with the Cardinals is up in the air. Fellow ESPN reporter Chris Mortensen says the Cards are trying to rework Kolb’s contract and if the two sides can’t reach an agreement, the quarterback and team might part ways.
Finally, Rams GM Les Snead confirms that the team will not use the franchise tag. That news is relatable to free agent receiver Danny Amendola, who has missed 20 games over the past two seasons due to various injuries. While the Rams remain interested in bringing him back, they won’t do so with the $10-plus million franchise tag cost.
